Inside Line Promotions - SALINAS, Calif. (Feb. 19, 2020) - The 2020 season began in a big way for Trey Burke, who participated this week in a racing school to prepare for the upcoming Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series.

The 15-year-old ventured to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, where he learned on and off the track during the Road to Indy development program.

"It's a Lucas Oil School of Racing where you have to work your way up through the ranks and earn a license," Burke said. "In order to get to Indy Lights and then IndyCar you need this license. This is where we're starting. They taught us the cars, the tracks, how everything worked from basic to more advanced. We were on the track quite a bit. Sometimes we'd do braking drills, line drills, passing stuff. I haven't really ventured out as far as asphalt. It taught me a lot."

Next up is the beginning of the six-event racing slate for the Formula 2000 race cars, which are two divisions below Indy Lights. The schedule features one weekend per month beginning April 3-5 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Fla. The ensuing events are May 15-17 at Nola Motorsports Park in Avondale, La.; June 12-14 at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Ky.; July 14-16 at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, N.J.; Aug. 28-30 at Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, Ill.; and Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Fla.

"We've done everything we can do on the other end," sponsor and family friend Joe Dooling said. "Now it's time to take him a different way than other kids are going in today's world. Everything is NASCAR. There are bigger and brighter things to race. We're continuing to stay in the open wheel though.

"He handled the car very well. I had a good friend of mine here that has been in the IndyCar business his life. He was pleased with what he saw on the track from Trey."

Burke, who garnered the IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars National Rookie of the Year Award last year to become the youngest driver to ever earn the award, will kick off his sprint car season March 7-8 at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., with the Sprint Series of Oklahoma.

Burke was tied for 16th in national points and he finished second in the standings in his home state of Texas last year when he scored three feature triumphs, 12 top fives and 19 top 10s in 23 starts.
