Tim Byrd, of Jonesborough, TN, piloted his 2018 TNT Chassis to victory lane at Volunteer Speedway on Saturday night. Byrd is running the new AFCO Crate Spec Shock Series with much success so far in 2019 and finally reaching victory lane at the Bulls Gap, TN oval after letting a win slip away just a week ago.

“I have been tickled to death with these AFCO shocks,” said Byrd, “We have practiced a lot on them and finally won one, we almost had one earlier in the year, but lapped traffic got in the way and we lost by about a foot.”

Byrd bested a strong field of 18 Pro Late Models at Volunteer, edging out Brandon Williams by three-tenths at the line to earn the win. While the AFCO Crate Spec Shocks get a weight break in FASTRAK competition, there is no such break at Volunteer Speedway. Byrd is utilizing the $187 per shock AFCO Crate Spec Shocks while also using a conventional single spring set up. Volunteer Speedway allows competitors to use stacked springs, while the FASTRAK Racing Series made the move away from stacked springs in 2018. So far in 2019, Byrd has sat on the front row after qualifying for every race at Volunteer Speedway.

“I have been turning faster times on the AFCOs than I was on adjustable shocks,” continued Byrd, “these feel just as good or better than adjustables in the corner. Also the support from AFCO is great, I bent one earlier in the year and sent it in to them, and they had a great turn-around time getting it repaired and back to me.”

The win was an emotional one for Byrd and his team, as they lost long-time crew member Johnny Sells earlier in the week. Sells worked nearly every day on the car and drove the truck and trailer to the track for Byrd.

“I won this one for Johnny,” said Byrd, “he was with me on every lap.”
