Dirt Late Model Ace Rex McCloskey Gives Karts a Try!

Having that ‘speed hunger’ after suffering two weeks of weather delays, 99 karts signed in to run 14 classes in 57 events Saturday night during the tenth seasonal running of the fifth annual “Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart Racing Series” on the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. And that hunger became evident in a wild night of ‘hard core’ racing action.

The most exciting event of the many that took place, Kix Country’s Krazy Kage Karts points leader Melody Simpson from Eudora, Ks put in a sterling drive when she spun early, was relegated to the back of the pack and then wend her way forward again. While top runners Jon Herndon and defending Kage Kart champ Delan Askins battled for the lead, they both touched in turns three and four with only two laps to go. Melody took quick advantage of the slight slow-down and charged by up high in the ‘marbles’ to maintain her points lead and claim her third seasonal victory. Herndon and Delan had to settle for the next two spots.

Young ElDorado Springs’ racer Dylan Timmerman has held the points lead in the Anderson Karting Engines Rookie Beginner division all season, but had only scored one feature win. After all was over tonight, Dylan’s count went to two. He outdistanced a very close J.C. Newell and Mason Shoemaker in that order.

Jordan Holland from Fulton pulled off another of his famous multi wins in both classes in which he also leads in points; the Goody’s Steakbugers Junior 1 Lights and Busso’s AA Muffler Junior 1 Heavies.

Long time karter, now also a current NASCAR Modified pilot at I-70 Speedway in the summertime, Peculiar’s Rick Carver carved out a third win of this season during his championship defense in the Fairfield Motor Service Stock Heavies.

Opposite of Carver’s approach, in the full-bore KDKD-FM “Checkered Flag” Opens, well known Dirt Late Model ace Rex McCloskey from Springfield gave kart racing a try. In his first heat, he was the first to be seen in many a moon to ‘slide-ways’ through the turns in his ’straight-up’ style kart, ’dirt style’, for a win. His car failed in the second round heat and Rex was unable to start the main event due to mechanical malfunctions. The main event was won by ‘regular’ and points leader Mike Floyd from Jefferson City .

The all-new Country Kitchen Junior 1 Amateur division run was easily won by Warsaw’s Kristina Strader. She easily outran the rest to score a ‘clean-sweep’ night. ‘Relatively’, Steve Strader, also from Warsaw, additionally pulled down a win by taking the top-spot in the TCI Tire Service major go.

All the way down from California….. (Missouri), Tyler Blank scored another win to hold his top points spot in the Yeager’s Suzuki Stock Lights. He had to out-drag top racers Trenton Nelson and Jamison Simmons, who finished second and third on Tyler’s kart’s rear-end.

It’ll be another “Saturday Night Kart-Fever” this coming weekend when the top competitors return for more thrilling action.

Pit gates open at 1 pm, the grandstands at 3, hot laps at 4 with the first round of qualifying heats firing up at 5 pm.

Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 7 to 10 years old-$3 and under 6 years of age, free.
