(Warrensburg, MO) Even in the off-season race drivers take a break from their busy preparation schedules just long enough to register for competition. The driver contingent from Warrensburg’s own Central Missouri Speedway is certainly no exception to this rule as evidenced by the tremendous pre-registration response for the fast-approaching race season. A total of fifty-six drivers have pre-registered in the four respective race divisions, up from 35 drivers at this same time last year! Drivers still have time to save $10 on their track registration fee by postmarking their submission before the pre-register cutoff date. All cars competing at CMS are required to register; registration is $50 until March 1, 2010, after which it increases to $60 for the remainder of the season. Send payment for registration to Central Missouri Speedway, 2807 S. Owens School Road, Independence, Missouri 64057. For registration forms contact Susan Walls at (816) 229-1338.

In the ‘Mighty’ Modified division, two-time and defending track champion Aaron Marrant leads a stellar list of early registered drivers. Southern-Missouri standout Jamie Ragland has expressed to officials that he plans on competing at CMS as often as his schedule allows in 2010. Five-time track champion ‘Fast’ Richard Layne, Dustin Boney, Jake Richards, crowd favorite Terry Schultz, last year’s championship runner-up finisher Dean Wille, Steve Twenter, James McMillin, and five-time 2009 feature winner Jason Thompson have also completed the early registration process. Clint “C.J.” Lyle, a former area super late model standout and twelve-time CMS feature winner, has also registered for modified action. Long-time time Concordia, Missouri driver ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer, recently purchased a pair of late models; however, he still has his modified in his race shop. It will be interesting to see what the veteran driver’s plans will be for the new season. Meyer is a champion late model driver and remains a fierce competitor in the modified division, ranking sixth on the all-time winner’s list at CMS since 1994. Last year, there were 9 different winners in 19 feature events contested at the speedway. As is tradition at CMS, the weekly modified winner will go home with $1,000 for the win and the 24-car feature event will pay $160 to start.

For the Late Model list, two-time track champion Kevin ‘the Kid’ Coyne, who will compete with a new GRT racecar completed early registration along with Stephen Clancy, Brett ‘Woody’ Wood, Jimmy Jobe, Dave Mosley, Walt Imhoff, rookie late model driver Bryan Montgomery, Derek Nevels, and returning driver Jason ‘Bodee’ Bodenhamer. This year, late model drivers have a new increased purse waiting for them upon returning to the high-banked track as the feature winner will go home with $600. The twenty-car feature event will pay at least $80 to start. Late models will compete under the passing points system on a weekly basis at the track this season adding to the excitement. The United Late Model Association (ULMA) will sanction the late model action at the speedway for the fourth-consecutive year by awarding championship ULMA points to its member drivers. Two-time and defending track champion Jon Binning, of Warrensburg, Missouri, is expected to return but will certainly have his work cut out for him in this ultra-competitive division. Word on the street has it that some standout drivers have stated they are out for one thing only, and that is to dethrone Binning as track champion. Last year, 11 different drivers visited victory lane in 16 feature events with only Binning and Bob King celebrating in victory lane on more than one occasion. It was not until the twelfth week of competition last season that a repeat winner emerged. In the midst of resurgence in weekly late model racing it is anyone’s guess which drivers may lay down the gauntlet in this division.

Street Stock racing continues to remain in the spotlight throughout the region this off-season. Ironically, even amidst the off-season drama surrounding this class, it appears to be alive and well as no less than 18 drivers populate the pre-registered list. Last year, the class provided fans with several of the best feature races of the year but only averaged fourteen drivers per week. The list of names certainly holds a lot of promise with last year’s championship runner-up Michael Mullins, returning for the side-by-side action along with 4-time 2009 feature winner Chad ‘the Bandit’ Eickleberry. Travis Faulkenberry, Brian Cox, Earl Fiene, Bruce Peterman , teenager Bryce McMillin, fourteen-time track champion John ‘the Boomer’ Brooks, Kevin Jameson, Justin Metzner, Brian ‘Ziggy’ Ziegler, James Morris, Herb Dannar, John Miller, Jay Prevete, Anthony Whitham, former champion Marc ‘the Shark’ Carter, and returning CMS driver Ed ‘Bubba’ Kline also grace the list. At press time it was unknown if defending track champion Brian ‘back in black’ Johnson would return to defend his title. In 2009, 8 different drivers raced to victory in 19 main events. Although Brooks has consistently stated “he will not compete on a weekly basis,” it is worth noting that the track’s all-time winningest driver sits just 11 victories shy of the 100 feature wins plateau heading into this season!

For the B-Modifieds, defending champion Ethan Isaacs of Bonner Springs, Kansas will battle a stout field of drivers to hold onto his crown, with one of those drivers being younger Brother, Lucas. Mark ‘the Mountain Man’ Evinger, Curtis Shaner, three-time 2009 feature winner Chris Brockway, A.J. Tice, Martin McGuire, Steve Neal, Dean Wille, Jason Billups, returning driver Brett Nail, John Brooks, Bronson Combs, Gary Fain, last year’s championship runner-up and two-time feature winner Jacob Ebert, and teen sensation Troy Carlyle have also thrown their names into the pre-registered driver ranks. Nic Bennett, a past champion in the street stock division, has moved his registration to the B-Modified division for 2010 adding to the growing list of competitive drivers. Six drivers grabbed feature-race wins last year in 19 races. Former asphalt driver Brad Smith of Belton, Missouri claimed 11 main-event wins last year but it is uncertain at press time what his plans are for the 2010 season. Please note, mention of driver names in any of the completing classes does not constitute guaranteed driver appearance(s) at the track. The aforementioned names are only the drivers who have pre-registered as of February 14, 2010.

Central Auto Racing Boosters (C.A.R.B.) will host its annual Clyde Ellis Race On/Snake Saturday event on Saturday, March 13, 2010 just across from the North Kansas City Pro Bowl. This event has long served as a kickoff to the KC-area race season drawing nearly 100,000 attendees each year. CMS drivers are highly encouraged to show their new 2010 looks at the event while at the same time gaining exposure for their sponsors. There will be games for the children, who will also get to meet the drivers on hand at the event. Divers wishing to participate are urged to pre-register by contacting Karen Darling at (660) 886-3989.
