Amarillo, Texas – June 11, 2011 - Veteran Kelly Cross took the lead near the races midway point and then was saved by a late race caution to win the Bob Howard P.D.C and Mopar National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas southern sport modified feature finale Saturday night at his home track, Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas.
Travis Johnson of Enid, Oklahoma and Lahoma, Oklahoma driver Ross McCartney shared the front row for the twenty-five lap feature and after a quick caution on the original start, Johnson took command at the drop of the green flag and quickly opened up a five car length advantage over McCartney. Chad McNamara and fifth starting Cross gave chase with Cross wasting little time getting to the front as he moved into the runner up position on lap five.

Behind him, 2009 Hutchinson Grand Nationals winner Donny Raney found the top groove too his liking and began making his move to the front from his eighth starting position and into the third spot by lap six.

Johnson, aboard the familiar #86J Carroll’s Racing Engines powered Big Chief chassis, began approaching lapped traffic on lap eight but didn’t have to contend with it very long as Kip Hughes brought out the caution when he came to a stop at the top of turn two.

The restart didn’t go much smoother as Coy Smith spun to a stop on the front stretch.

Once racing resumed it was still Johnson, followed by Cross, Raney and McCartney but the double file restart behind the leader gave Cross the chance to stay even with the leader and coming down the front stretch to complete lap eleven, moved around Johnson to take the lead.

Cross, aboard the #00 Guymon Racing Engines powered D&M race car chassis, began putting distance between him and the rest of the field while Johnson and Raney waged a side by side battle for the runner up position.

Raney would take over the runner up position at the races midway point while Cross continued out front.

With five laps the front runners once again approached lapped traffic and with Raney bottled up behind a slower car, Johnson found his chance and retook the runner up position dropping Raney back to forth.

Johnson, who had lost his power steering around the races midway point, closed ground on the leader and coming out of turn four with two laps to go drove underneath Cross to take the apparent lead. But the final caution of the night would fall when Smith spun and turn three which collected Triple B Oil Field Services of Elk City rookie contender Devin Gerrior.

The final restart put Cross back out front and he held on the final two laps to take his second career series southern sport modified feature victory, both coming in front of the hometown crowd.
“Johnson showed me where the rubber was and thankfully that caution came out and I kinda took away his line on the restart,” said Cross later. “I really wasn’t sure where on the track to run but Raney showed me the top was fast and that’s where we went.”

Johnson would hold on to finish second with Doug Gillispie, Raney and McCartney rounding out the top five. Robert Elliott drove the Johnie Rauschenberg #21 sport modified from thirteenth to sixth with defending series champion Todd Decker, who climbed his way into the feature finale after winning the “B” feature, came home seventh. Landon Maddox came from his 23[SUP]rd[/SUP] starting position to finish tenth.
The eight lap heat races for the 34 car field were won by Johnson, McCartney, Barry Tietz and McNamara.

It was not a good night for rookie and series point leader Brandon Smith as hopes for his second feature victory of the season went up in smoke in the fourth heat race with a blown motor and was done for the night.

Next up for the NCRA southern sport modified division is coming up next Friday and Saturday night with a pair of events in the state of Kansas. It all kicks off on Friday night, June 17[SUP]th[/SUP], in the series first trip back after a one year hiatus to Caney Valley Speedway. Then on Saturday night it is on to their second appearance of the season at the home of the series, 81 Speedway in Park City.
