<B>TEAM MOPAR ADDS DARLAND TO ALL-STAR ROSTER
Darland to Pilot Keith Kunz Motorsports Entry for the Mopar Million</b>
CENTER LINE, Mich. - Four-time USAC National Champion Dave Darland has been named as the driver of the second Keith Kunz Motorsports entry for the upcoming Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora. Darland, who will be a teammate to Team Mopar driver Jay Drake, will pilot the No. 71 entry for Keith Kunz Motorsports.
Team owner Kunz saw the opportunity to hire Darland for the event in early August, after the USAC standout parted ways with his sprint car team. Kunz, who had entered a second car in the unprecedented event, contacted Darland and offered him the ride.
"We [Darland and I] had been talking prior to his split with his sprint car team," Kunz said. "I had entered a second car for the Mopar Million, and we had been looking for the right person to drive it. I called Dave after he left his sprint car team, and we decided to team up for the Million."
The unique format for the Mopar Million Sprint at Eldora characterizes the one-of-a-kind quality of the event, which will be held September 19-20 at Eldora Speedway. With 150 teams entered, Kunz and company realize that qualifying and heat race finishes will seal the team's fate.
"The format is really tough," Kunz said. "With the way the format is set up, you want to qualify in the top 40 to 60 [as far as] time range. Posting times in that range will give you a good start in the heat races, which will be key. It's going to be a challenge to make the A-main."
Though making the A-main will be difficult, Kunz knows that Darland, Drake and the Keith Kunz Motorsports team will be up for the challenge.
"You expect your drivers to step up for an event of this magnitude. The whole team needs to step up," Kunz said. "We've been working very hard to give Dave and Jay a good shot, and once we get in the show, we'll be in the hunt. We definitely have a shot at winning the race."
