DesMOINES DRIVER DOUBLES, LENEXA’S WOLF’S BOTH WAGER AND WIN IN SEDALIA’S COLISEUM INDOOR KART SERIES!

Third Generation Racer Finally Finds the ‘Fast Layne’ to Victory!

When racing director and track ‘maintenance master’ Jim Smith knew he had to find a solution to keep the 1/8th mile, high banked dirt oval from freezing through a bitterly cold week, his wise use of calcium chloride in the mix made for a super swift racing surface all evening long.

During race night 11 of the “Coliseum Indoor Winter Speedway Kart Racing Series”, the track was in perfect shape after being pounded for 448 green-flag laps by 75 karts in 46 events. In fact, things were so swift that the entire program took only 3 hours and 36 minutes from start to finish including the two, short intermissions.

After winning many times the last two years, DesMoines, Iowa ’hot shoe’ Bryan Nevins, Jr. visited for the first time this season. It was apparent that he hadn’t forgotten a thing about how to win in the Coliseum as he copped twin wins in both the Schilby’s Auto Center Junior 2 Lights and the TCI Tire Centers Junior 2 Heavies.

Young Tony Layne from Kansas City had won countless heat races at the Coliseum in his first full year of racing, but always seemed to find bad luck when it came feature time. He finally found the right combo as he outdistanced fleeing chauffeurs Kale Reichel, who towed all the way down for the first time from Madison Lake, Minnesota and Nick Jones, who finished third.

Layne, a third generation from a well-known, local racing family, was happily congratulated by his father in victory lane; 6-time and defending “Mighty Modified” champion at Central Missouri Speedway, ’Fast’ Richard Layne.

The ‘Wolf Brothers’ Ben and Will, both from Lenexa, Kansas, for the very first time both picked up feature wins in both of their subsequent divisions on the same night; Ben in the Terry’s Osage Express Rookie Advanced and Will fighting hard to cop the Goody’s Steakburgers Junior 1 Lights.

Defending Kix Country Crazy Kage Karts champion Delan Askins has been having a tough year so far. But he was able to pull down his second main event victory of the season. He out-bested Jon Herndon and Jeff Hinkle.

With a name and kart number very similar to established local sprint car racing hero Bill Utz, Bill’s grandson T.J. Muths (pronounced like ‘Utz’ with an ‘m’ at the front!), drove his immaculately prepared 56-m kart to first place in only the second running of the Country Kitchen Junior 1 Amateurs.

Shawnee, Ks’ Kerry King was able to outmaneuver Dale’s Tow Stock Super Heavy past champion and current points leader Billy Hurt to knock down his second main event of the year.

The speedway dirt karts will return this Saturday night for a more than complete racing program; motorcycles, warming up for the 4th Annual Yeager’s Cycle Sales of Sedalia “Coliseum Arena-Cross the following week on Saturday night, February 22nd and Sunday afternoon the 23rd, will compete in some ’flat-track’ oval racing to spike the 12th race of the 2002-3 Coliseum series.

Pit gates open at 1 pm, the grandstands at 3, hot laps at 4 with the first round of qualifying heats firing up at 5 pm.

Admission to the grandstands for adults is $5, 7 to 10 years old-$3 and under 6 years of age, free.
