ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (July 15) – The top two drivers in the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour standings traded wins over the weekend at Sweetwater Speedway.
Defending champion Zane DeVilbiss picked up his second IMCA Modified series victory of the season in the Friday night opener in Rock Springs. Current point leader and 2009 titlist Justen Yeager paced the Saturday show for his EQ WWMT first checkers this year.
DeVilbiss made the Friday feature by winning his “B” race, then raced from the 13th starting spot and took the lead from George Ashby after Ashby's motor expired on lap 19.
Yeager took second with Kevin Wright, hard charger Randy Artz, and Travis Metz rounding out the top five. Artz, also a qualifier from the “B” features, advanced 13 spots to crack the top four.
Both Casey Delp and Dustin Hansen ended the night early due to transmission woes, and both within the first two laps of the initial green flag.
Yeager started seventh on Saturday, had Artz in his sights by lap three and finally completed his pass for the lead on lap 23.
DeVilbiss, Artz, Delp and Austin Black followed. Pole starter Craig Teter lost his engine while chasing Artz on the second circuit.
Chase Hansen was the hard charger as he advanced 10 spots to finish 14th. DeVilbiss, Black and ninth fin*ishing Wade Taylor all moved up seven positions from their places on the original starting grid.
Three cautions slowed the Friday feature, just one on Saturday.
Yeager’s win was his tour career 10[SUP]th[/SUP]. DeVilbiss is now a nine-time EQ Wild West Tour winner.
The tour is at Fairgrounds Speedway in Cortez, Colo., for an Aug. 12-13 doubleheader before concluding Sept. 16-17 at Atomic Motor Raceway.
