Lebanon,Mo.-The dirt removal process at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway has started as the Speedway has announced that it will be going back to Asphalt Racing for the 2009 season.
The Speedway which was built in 2003 by Bill Williard as a dirt-track and remained dirt until after the 1988 season.In 1989,the track was paved and became a member of the Nascar Weekly Racing Series family and stayed pavement until after the 2002 season.During that time,the track was reconfigured to provide more side by side racing in 1992
In the early dirt days,drivers such as Ken Essary,Larry Phillips,Billy Moyer and many others made the track a steady diet of racing there as top drivers such as Bill Frye,Rex McCroskey,Rex Merritt,Lslie Essary and many others cut there racing careers there.
The Speedway when Asphalt served home to 3 of Larry Phillip's 5 Nascar National titles and hosted some of the finest Sat night racing anywhere around.The Speedway hosted several Artgo LateModel Specials along with USAC Sprint and Midget racing events along with an outstanding weekly show which featured LateModels,Modifieds,Sportsman,Bombers and StreetStock type cars.
National known drivers such as Rich Volger,Tony Stewart,Steve Butler,Steve Carlson found the speedway to there liking while drivers such as Mike Wallace and Jamie McMurray used the track to help vault there careers.
The track went back to dirt in 2003 and stayed with the dirt surface until just this last Friday when crews started the 1st phase of the dirt removing.
Speedway staff feels that it will take 6-10 days with good weather to take the dirt and clay surface off and check the Asphalt surface and its condition.
