CONCORD, NC – Sept. 3, 2010 – DIRTcar Racing’s red-hot national points battles are heading into the final month of the 2010 season with Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich. (Late Models) and Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind. (UMP Modifieds) clinging to precarious leads.

The 23-year-old Schlenk’s near season-long points lead in the marquee DIRTcar Late Model division has shrunk to just 45 points (2,754-2,709) over defending national champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., entering the busy Labor Day weekend slate of action, setting up a dramatic run to the finish line.

DIRTcar Racing’s weekly points end the first weekend in October, but the Late Models and UMP Modifieds will have one final points showdown when the DIRTcar UMP Championships are contested on Oct. 8-9 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
With all the Late Model championship contenders already surpassing 35 sanctioned starts this season, they are now replacing their worst finish/points nights to improve their totals.

Feger has made a stirring rally, erasing a deficit to Schlenk that was over 1,000 points just before the start of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals in mid-June. The reigning DIRTcar national and Summer Nationals titlist skimmed more markers off Schlenk’s edge by earning points in three of his five starts last week – a victory on Aug. 29 at Shepp’s Speedway in Alexander, Ill., and third-place finishes on Aug. 21 at Highland (Ill.) Speedway and Aug. 27 at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.
Schlenk, who leads the circuit with 18 feature wins in 2010, had a subpar week, failing to finish high enough to replace any of his worst finishes/points nights. A seventh-place run on Aug. 28 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio, was his only top-10 finish in three starts.

The UMP Modified points race, meanwhile, is shaping up as an epic battle to the end. Gilpin, 19, leads Clint DeMoss of Bloomington, Ind., by 13 points and Mike Harrison of Highland, Ill., by 16 points – and the top-seven drivers in the UMP Modified points standings are separated by just 54 points.

Other DIRTcar Racing national points leaders include Scott Weber of Festus, Mo. (Pro Late Models), Jeff Herzog of Herculaneum, Mo. (Sportsman), Jonathan Smith (Limited Modifieds), Joel Funk of Dwight, Ill. (Stock Cars), Brad Venhaus of Aviston, Ill. (Factory Stocks) and Rob Shaw of Highland, Ill. (Sport Compacts).
