CONCORD, NC – Sept. 24, 2010 – Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich. (Late Models) and Mike Harrison of Highland, Ill. (UMP Modifieds) headed into the penultimate weekend of DIRTcar Racing weekly points action leading their respective division’s national standings.

The 23-year-old Schlenk, who grabbed the DIRTcar Late Model national points lead early in the season and hasn’t relinquished it, entered this weekend’s events with an 80-point edge (2,798-2,718) over defending national champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill. That gap remained unchanged after last weekend’s results saw neither Schlenk nor Feger add to their points totals, which are determined using drivers’ best 35 event points nights (feature finish plus car-count bonus points).
Schlenk, who leads the circuit with 20 sanctioned wins this season and is seeking his first-ever DIRTcar Late Model national crown, had a subpar weekend with scored finishes of 13th (American Late Model Series event) and 21st (weekly feature) on Sept. 17 at Winston Speedway in Rothbury, Mich., and 18th on Sept. 18 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. The 32-year-old Feger didn’t perform well enough to replace his worst points nights of the season after finishing fifth in the Dodge Ram 50 on Sept. 17 at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill., and 14 th in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Pepsi Nationals on Sept. 18 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.

DIRTcar Racing’s weekly points end next weekend (Oct. 1-3), but Late Model and UMP Modified drivers will have one more opportunity to gather points in the season-ending DIRTcar UMP Nationals on Oct. 8-9 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.
Schlenk is in the driver’s seat with time running out on the 2010 points campaign, but Feger’s chances of repeating as national champ remain alive – if he can close the season on a hot streak and Schlenk fails to finish high enough to add points to his total. After Feger unofficially cut Schlenk’s points lead to 61 points with a Monster Midwest Tour victory on Thursday night (Sept. 23) at Tri-City Speedway – an event not yet reflected in the latest points standings, which were released on Friday morning by DIRTcar officials – he still has five 70-point nights on his ledger that he can replace. Winning a feature with 30 or more cars entered is worth 85 points, so Feger could conceivably slice up to 15 points a night off Schlenk’s edge.

The UMP Modified national points race, meanwhile, is shaping up as a dramatic, down-to-the-wire thriller. Harrison, who is celebrating his 36 th birthday today (Sept. 24), entered this weekend’s action leading Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., by four points and Nick Allen of Wheatfield, Ind., by six points.

Just 53 points separate the top-five drivers in the UMP Modified national points standings.

Other DIRTcar Racing national points leaders include Scott Weber of Festus, Mo. (Pro Late Models), Jeff Herzog of Herculaneum, Mo. (Sportsman), Jonathan Smith (Limited Modifieds), Joel Funk of Dwight, Ill. (Stock Cars), Brad Venhaus of Aviston, Ill. (Factory Stocks) and Rob Shaw of Highland, Ill. (Sport Compacts).
