Dixon a moron? Gimme a break

We know that sprint fan32. I"m new at this and it never even entered my mind that a person I"m replying to could be a 15 year old kid. Spoke before I thought (so to speak). So no hard feelings sprint fan32. Keep going to the races and don"t do drugs.

Melvin hasnt been racing as long, so isnt that kind of a STUPID comparrison? compare the stats for the current year, which is the debate and hand, and Melvin comes out on top. I have nothing against Dixon, he is a good driver. some people make it easy to want to dislike a driver when their so called fans get on here and bash someone else for having a good year. So I dont think its Dixon thats the MORON its, the ones who are flat out jealous and cant stand the fact that their driver didnt have the "best" year. Everyone done the same thing to English lat year, and rodney the year before that and etc. Grow up, I assure you the guy that comes out on top does it because he
earned it!

Good luck next season!

Here's what I say....take the...mmmm...top 40 in points in UMP at the end of the year. Then, run a special late model event (non-points), for say....in the neighborhood of $25,000 to $35,000 to win. It could be held at Eldora, or another close competitive track.

Then, when the dust settles, even though Melvin may win the points, we'll get to see who's who in terms of competition. If we wins, congrats, if he finishes poorly (without breaking), well then...that's pretty self explainatory.

Just a thought.....

It doesn't seem right to me to judge a driver's 'superiority' by one race, either. Sometimes you have good nights, sometimes you have bad nights. Ability does not have anything to do with luck. Some people are outstanding drivers, and never win because of bad luck. But that does not mean they can't drive well.

moonflow; I think that would be a great idea. But it should definately be a track that would give nobody home track advantage. I personally think the COC race should be held somewhere else. At a track that doesnt normally host late models. Thats the only was it is truly gonna be fair!

1. No, a single race doesn't necesarrily judge how good a driver is right off the bat, but it can be a good gauge of his skills compared to others. If some drivers are as good as people make them out to be, then they shouldn't have a problem being competitive consistantly with the big boys like Moyer, O'Neal, Babb and Weaver.

2. Problem is, most of the tracks here do host late models. Now, you could go to a track farther out that maybe doesn't normally have big guns running it, like Wheatland, but the farther you get from the drivers, the less they want to come.

I think that a starts/wins and average start/average finish ratio might be a pretty good indicator of a drivers performance. Those kinds of stats are not dependent on how long a driver has been competing, or how many races he runs a season, its a measure of the drivers overall performance from qualifying through to features on however many events they run.

And if you break it down for each track the driver competes at over a season, then you can get a fair idea of whether or not they are a very good racer, or just good at one track and pretty mediocre everywhere else. Or vice versa, maybe they just stink at a few places and do very well at a number of others.

Seems to me that it will never really be completely fair until either all tracks do either time trials or pill draw...one or the other.

If you go to a track that does time trials all the time and you are fast you will always get to be in the top 6. If you do a pill draw you don't know if you'll be in the front or the back.

I agree

Anna, I agree with you on that one. Although, I wasn't aware that any tracks, other than Belleville, (that regularly run UMP Late Models) do a pill draw instead of qualifying.

I would really like to see Belleville invest in a timing system. Or, at least, not have the drivers draw again after the dash is over. I never really understood why they have you draw to line up the heats, take the top X cars to the dash, run the dash and then make you draw again to set the top 6.

I'm surprised that UMP doesn't make it a rule that in order for your track to be sanctioned, the track has to be equipped with a timing system and qualify.

By the way - I forgot to put my two cents in on Dixon. I have always been a fan. I love it when he takes the high side. I think he takes just about as many risks as any driver that I've ever seen. I think it really says something about his ability that he is 2nd in UMP points and still taking risks like he does.

Moron - Absolutley Not.

Guts and Talent - You Bet!
