Double X Speedway hands out Awards

TIPTON, Mo. (Nov. 5, 2002) - The Sportsman Racing Association hosted the 2002 Awards Dinner/Dance Saturday night in Tipton, MO honoring the race car drivers from Double-X Speedway.

The "Top Ten" drivers in the O'REILLY AUTO PARTS WINGED SPRINTS were: the 2002 Track Champion, Lowe Cannell, Fulton; 2nd place, Lanny Carpenter, Clarksburg; 3rd place, J. Kinder, Iberia; 4th place, Jesse Hockett, Warsaw;5th place, John Reutter, Holts Summit; 6th place, Marce Kronk, Fulton; 7th place, Travis Marsch, Russellville; 8th place, Tony Crank, Sedalia; 9th place, Marty Ballenger, Malta Bend; 10th place, Eric Schrock, Columbia.

In the BLANK'S BACKHOE SERVICE/TREASURED MOMENTS SPORTSMAN division, the "Top Ten" were: 2002 Track Champion for the second year in a row, Steve Beach, Eldon; 2nd place, James Rutledge, California; 3rd place, Jim Turpin, Jefferson City; 4th place, Richard Brainard, Sedalia; 5th place, Dale Berry, Tuscumbia; 6th place, Todd McCoin, Barnett; 7th place, Kevin Caldwell, Tipton; 8th place, Eddie Keeran, California; 9th place, Tara Hudson, Jefferson City; 10th place, Robert Cunningham, Tipton.

The REED'S AUTOMOTIVE STREET STOCKS "Top Ten" were: 2002 Track Champion, Stan Henson Jr., Russellville; 2nd place, Ted Welschmeyer, Holts summit; 3rd place, Mark Caldwell, Jefferson City; 4th place, Brad Chamberlain, Versailles; 5th place, Greg Holdren, Tipton; 6th place Ken Rowles, Tipton; 7th place, Jody Romig, Syracuse; 8th place, Michael Grant, Versailles; 9th place, James Sharp, Barnett; 10th place, John Newman, Barnett.

Friends of Racing Awards were presented to Jean Lutz, Brad Schrimpf, Brian Moseley, Heather Wehmeyer, Kristi Thacker, Amy Doran, Mickey Snyder, M.T. Wade, woody & Melody Foster, Emily Wirts, A. J. Wirts; Charlie;s Pool Hall, S & T Truck & trailer Repair, The Vault, Paul's Carpet Service, Randy combs, Wyman Basinger VFW Post #35; Joe Machens Ford; On Track Photos, Mid-Mo Ambulance, Moniteau county Sheriff's department, California Fire Department, Wood's Towing, Mike's Towing and Recovery, J & T Racing Supplies; California Kiwanis, M & M's Popcorn/Pizza; Clennin's, Putnam chevrolet-Pontiac-Geo, the Woody Carpenter Family, Virginia Caldwell, Greg Clemmons of KDKD Radio, Jeff Shackelford of KREL Radio, the CAlifornia Democrat, Tipton times, Creative Awards; O'Reilly Auto Parts; Blank's Backhoe Service; Treasured Moments and Reed's Automotive. All contributed in some way to the success of the 2002 racing season.

Gifts were presented to Kyle & Carol Wirts, track owners and to Larry Blank and Ron Borgmann, SMRA officers. Rudy and Ellie Wirts each received caps and official babysitters, Tootsie and Ernie each received a gift of appreciation.

Most Improved driver awards went to Jesse Hockett in the sprints; Richard Brainard in the sportsman; and Ted Welschmeyer in the street stocks.

Awards voted on by fellow drivers were the 110% Hard Charger award which went to John Reutter in the winged sprints; Kevin Caldwell in the sportsman and John Newman in the street stocksl and the PEER award which went to J.Kinder in the sprints; Kevin Caldwell in the sportsman and Stan Henson Jr in the street stocks.

This year's "Champion Spark Plug" award went to Charlie Hendley of Charlie's Pool Hall. Charlie has been a wall sign sponsor and a dash for cash sponsor and a strong supporter of the Woody Carpenter Scholarship program. He received a clock in appreciation for the support he continue to shows to the sport of auto racing.

Perfect attendance awards went to winged sprint drivers, Lowe Cannell, Lanny Carpenter, J.Kinder and TRavis Marsch; in the sportsman division: Steve Beach, James Rutledge, Jim Turpin, Richard Brainard, Dale Berry, Todd McCoin, Kevin Caldwell and Robert Cunningham; and street stock drivers, Stan Henson Jr, Ted welschmeyer, Mark caldwell, Brad Chamberlain, Jody Romig and James Sharp. In addition to those with perfect attendance, others receiving point fund checks were Jesse Hockett, John Reutterl Marce Kronk, Tony Crank, Marty Ballenger and Jeff wingate; sportsman drivers, Eddie Keeran, Tara Hudson and Jim Wheatley; and street stock drivers, Greg Holdren, Ken Rowles, Michael Grant, John Newman, Hal Smith and Kyle Jeffries.

Track official Duane Pace who lost his life while flagging traffic for MoDot was inducted into the "Hall of Fame." Robert and Julie Pace received a plaque and small plaques were given to each of Duane's sons. His name will also appear on the "Hall of Fame" plaque that is on display at California Lanes.

Woody Carpenter Sportsmanship awards were presented to Jerff Wingate in the sprints; Robert Cunningham in the sportsman and Blake Koetting in the street stocks.

Race Fans of the Year receiving ceramic mugs were John and Mary Shelton,Clarksburg, Mary is the mother of Lanny Carpenter, Martreta Pettigrew and Myra Lutz and has been attending races for over 50 years.

The Cannonball Porter "Rookie of the Year" awards went to John Reutter in the sprints; James Rutledge in the sportsman; and Michael Grant in the street stocks. This award went to the driver in each division who finished the highest in the point standings. Other first year drivers were Travis Marsch, Eric Schrock, Jeff Wingate and Donnie Rothwell in the sprints; Ray smith in the sportsman, and Blake Koetting, James Sharp, Michael Lucas and Mike Kessler in the street stocks.

Richard White the track photogrpher won the 50/50 drawing taking home $110. A Silent Auction raised almost $300 for the Drivers Point Fund. The evening which started with a meal catered by Jean Lutz and ended with a dance that went well past midnight saw drivers taking home over $5000 in awards and point fund checks.

Next season will officially open Sunday, May 4, 2003.
