FAIRMONT, Minn. (June 21) – In the 11-year history of the United States Modified Touring Series, Kelly Shryock has garnered more than 150 main event victories and 10 titles – nine National championships and one Southern Series crown.
It all started more than two decades ago for the second-generation racer in the Hobby Stock division at the Fairmont Raceway in Fairmont, Minn.
This Monday, June 21, the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour returns to the popular half-mile oval for the first time since June 20, 2001 – a race that Shryock won with a last-lap pass of Mike Chasteen.
Some of the other drivers expected include Ryan Gustin who is looking to extend his USMTS win streak to four at Fairmont, plus Tommy Myer, Jon Tesch, Zack VanderBeek, 2008 USMTS National Champion Tim Donlinger, Corey Dripps, Al Hejna, Dereck Ramirez, Steve Holzkamper, Ryan Ruter, Mike Hansen, Chase Junghans, Colt Mather, Mike Steensma, Nick Deal, Mark Dotson, 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn, 13-year-old rookie Lucas Schott, Mike Sorensen, Bobby Swanson, Nate Wasmund, Steve Wetzstein and more.
Steven Whiteaker Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Shane Hebert of Lafayette, La., are enjoying their first trips north to run with the USMTS during this whole swing. Texan Rodney “The Rocket” Sanders will also be in the Land of 10,000 Lakes this weekend, along with New Mexico long-haul racers Bumper Jones and Johnny Scott.
The touring USMTS titans will find some tough competition from the Fairmont regulars looking to defend their home turf. Troy Swearingen, J.J. Wise, Eric Dailey, Josh Meyer, Ricky Stephan, Jeff Ignaszewski, Josh Ruby, Chris Rakness, Oliver Kollofski, Roger Nielsen and others are expected to protect victory lane for the “home boys.”
Gates open at 5 p.m. and hot laps start at 7 p.m. with racing to follow. Also on the racing card will be 305 Sprint Cars.
NASCAR veteran driver and SPEED Channel broadcaster Kenny Wallace will be in attendance to sign autographs for the fans prior to strapping on his own helmet and competing against the USMTS Modifieds for three straight days beginning Monday at Fairmont and ending on Wednesday at the I-35 Speedway in Mason City, Iowa.
The Fairmont event on Monday kicks off a stretch of five events in five days, and serves as the fourth of eight events over the course of 11 days. Each race is worth a minimum of $2,000 to the winner with no less than $250 to start the main event. More than $100,000 in total prize money is up for grabs during the swing.
The Fairmont Raceway is a 1/2-mile high-banked dirt oval located 1.0 mile south of I-90 (Exit 99) on CR 39 (at the Martin County Fairgrounds). For more information call 515-295-5555 or 507-235-6996 on race day or visit www.fairmontraceway.com online.
