Inside Line Promotions - SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (June 25, 2013) - After a scary start, Andrew Felker put together another solid performance on Sunday at Angell Park Speedway.
He opened the 11th annual Sue Thiel Memorial - sanctioned by POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series, Honda USAC National Dirt Midget Series and the Stark Automotive Group/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series - by nearly crashing during qualifying, when he timed in fourth quickest.
"I went out the first lap and biked it up the track," he said. "Then I ran a conservative lap. I felt like we left something out on the table on that one."
Felker charged from fifth to finish second in his heat race, locking himself into the feature at the third-mile oval. He started on the inside of the second row and maintained that position for most of the main event.
"The first half of the race I was running top three," he said. "I was running up above the cushion. With the rain the track had plumped up a little. The cushion got so big you couldn't really run on the cushion. The top three kinda hopped above it trying to find a new line.
"The cushion got too big on entry. You couldn't get above it without upsetting the car too much. I went to the bottom, but it kept getting slicker and slicker. I just had to hold on there at the end."
Felker held on for a fifth-place finish. It was his eighth top five of the season.
He continues to lead the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and Badger Midget Series standings, and ranks third in the Honda USAC National Dirt Midget Series.
"It was a real strong night," Felker said.
He has a busy weekend scheduled with the Ford EcoBoost Challenge on Friday at Bloomington Speedway in Bloomington, Ind., and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Dirt Midget Series before a Badger National Midgets event Sunday at Angell Park Speedway.
