CALHAN, Colo. (April 21) – Ten Saturday shows for IMCA Modifieds are on the schedule this season at El Paso County Speedway.

Opening night is April 24.

The quarter-mile D-shaped clay track was built four years ago around an existing rodeo arena at the fairgrounds in Calhan. Both horse and automotive races had previously been held on a half-mile track at the same site.

“We had run Modifieds very similar to IMCA’s since the track opened in 2007,” explained Alan Davis, promoter and president of the Colorado Outlaw Racing Association. “Our drivers had started expressing an interest in IMCA at the tail of the 2008 season. The rules are the biggest thing because they level the playing field for the drivers. Sanctioning also adds legitimacy to our local program because IMCA is a national organization.”

El Paso County will be part of IMCA’s ButlerBuilt Central Region for the Modifieds. Other race dates are May 8 and 15, June 19, July 3, 17 and 24, Aug. 7 and 21, and Sept. 18.

The 40-lap feature on July 3 pays $500 to win and will be followed by fireworks. The County Fair Night show is July 24.

“We want this to be a family oriented track,” Davis said, noting grandstand seating for 3,400 and new lighting installed last year. “We’re 30 miles east of Colorado Springs and that puts us near a market of half a million people.”

The fourth track in Colorado to start or resume sanctioning this year, El Paso County looks to convert two other classes to IMCA divisions in the near future.

“We already have what is basically an IMCA Stock Car class and will most likely add that sanction in 2012,” said Davis. “We also have a hornet class similar to IMCA’s Sport Compacts and will probably sanction them when we do the Stock Cars.”
