BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 11) – Four first time champions were crowned on the sixth and final night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.

Jimmy Gustin of Marshalltown led the last five laps in winning Saturday’s Modified main event at Boone Speedway. Horicon’s Jeremy Christians became the first Wisconsin driver to top the Stock Car feature. Jason Wilkinson of Neligh won the Hobby Stock feature and is the first Nebraska driver to earn a Super Nationals championship in any division. Brett Meyer of Lytton took the checkers in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main.

Total car count for the 28th annual Super Nationals was 805, the most ever when five divisions were on the weekly card. One hundred and eighty two Northern SportMods saw action in the fifth straight year that class established a new record since its debut at Boone in 2005.

The green light stayed on for the first 32 of 40 laps in the Modified main. Pole starter Kevin Stoa led the first eight circuits before pulling off and giving way to Brandon Blochlinger.

Blochlinger had his hands full with Clint Hatlestad before 15th starting Luke Wanninger entered the fray. The rookie chased Blochlinger into lapped traffic right at midway and was just inches away from being scored as the leader on lap 31.

Back to back yellows came out on lap 33. Gustin lined up behind Blochlinger for the second restart, stayed close and then drove by with five to go, when mechanical problems sent the leader off the track in the middle of turns three and four.

Gustin pulled away from that point, winning comfortably ahead of Johnny Saathoff, 2007 champion Todd Shute and Scott Olson.

Making the 10th Saturday night start of his Super Nationals career, Christians had to chase down pole starter Dustin Smith, finally completing his pass for the front spot on the 15th of 30 laps.

The 20th starting Michael Bruns, Jamie Colwell and Smith all stayed close before Colwell got caught up in a five car tangle on lap 20. Smith lined up behind Christians for restarts then and again on lap 25 but couldn’t catch up.

Defending champion Donavon Smith was third and Marcus Fagan ran fourth. Chad Palmer had led the first six circuits before Dustin Smith took over.

Out of state drivers took the top three spots on the Hobby Stock podium for the first time, as Wilkinson bested Minne*sotan Dustin Larson and fellow Nebraskan across the stripe.

Larson led Marsh in a close battle over the first 14 laps. Wilkinson took over second the next time around, needed a lap to reel in Larson and then ran in front the last 14 circuits.

John Watson was the highest finishing home state driver in fourth. Defending champion Shannon Anderson was running in the top five when he drove to the infield with a flat tire just after halfway.

Eric Flander and Jesse Sobbing enjoyed stints at the front of the SportMod main before Meyer took over on the 18th of 30 laps. Sobbing kept up the chase before being slowed with a flat tire.

Meyer ran in the top four all the way, passing Flander for second after a lap 17 restart and buzzing by Sobbing coming out of turn four the next time around.

Flander, Randy Roberts and Nathan Chodur rounded out the top four finishers.

Clint Hatlestad of Glencoe, Minn., won the Harris Auto Racing Race of Champions for Modifieds and Brian Irvine of Oelwein topped the Sunoco Race Fuels Race of Champions for Stock Cars, both in convincing fashion.

Top honors in the Arnold Motor Supply Hobby Stock Race of Champions went to Brandon Pruitt of Dexter. Tyler Frye of Belleville, Kan., captured the Arnold Motor Supply Race of Champions for the SportMods.

Ray Guss Jr. of Milan Ill., repeated as the Late Model champion at Super Nationals by winning the Labor Day Deery Brothers Summer Series event. He also clinched the tour title with the victory. David Murray Jr. of Ober*lin, Kan., won Friday’s Fast Shafts Modified All-Star Invitational for the third time.

Total purse paid out during the week was approximately $275,000. The Modified and Late Model mains both paid $2,000 to win. The Stock Car main, Harris Auto Racing RoC and Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational each paid $1,000. Northern SportMod and Hobby Stock mains both paid $600 and the Sunoco RoC paid $500. The Hobby Stock and SportMod races of champions each paid $300 to win.

The Modified main, All-Star race and Harris Auto Racing RoC were also qualifying events for the 2011 Fast Shafts Invitational ballot. Some $70,000 in contingency awards were given during the Sep. 6-11 event.

Twenty-three states and two Canadian provinces were represented at Super Nationals.
