With Saturday's hot weather and high winds taken into consideration, the track surface at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg overcame the 'dirt track racing in the daytime' conditions for a super-fast and thrilling night of racing action during the KWKJ-98.5 FM Radio Race Night.

With 42 Mighty Modifieds rolling in for the night's competition and highest paid weekly Modified purse in the nation, most of the thoughts turned toward stopping the top CMS winner so far this year, Basehor, Ks' Tim "Blue Bunny" Karrick.

During the now-normal 25 circuits in the 24 car, Farm and Home of Warrensubrg/T-Mobile Modified main event, Karrick had to repeatedly re-pass his top comps to squeeze out his sixth victory of the season and the weekly $1K first place payoff. The win was merely a car length over 'Movin' Dave Meyer, who passed and re-passed Karrick countless times but came up short with $900 for second, the $800 third place was pounced on by close running Chad 'gator' Lyle, fourth place and 700 bucks went to Terry 'the terminator' Schultz while 6-time CMS champ "Fast" Richard Layne was a close fifth for $600.

It took two 'last chance' 'B' features to find the final six transfer cars, which were won by Urich's Charlie Laizure and Dr. Don Cable from Sedalia.

Six qualifying heats needed were won by Karrick, Jimmy Wooten, Alan Deatherage, Richard Layne, Bobby Layne and 'Chargin' Charlie Ebert.

Having to use his son Danny's 'back up' ride due to his regular mount's engine being in for repairs, Tom Charles had a tough start on the night that later turned into another of his famous 'charger of the night' moniker. Charles was DQ's from the heat for a bit of over-aggressive driving, had to start in the back of the 'B' where he made the main with a second place. After starting 21st in the main affair, he charged through traffic and wound up 7th, good for a hard earned 450 smackers.

Having grown up at the very site of the 1/3rd mile, high banked clay oval, still-young but hot Late Model chauffeur Jason 'hammer' Bodenhamer from Columbus decided to return to the speed-plant for the first time in quite a few years. He had double duty driving chores. Besides running his own Modified, he picked up a ride in Knob Noster's Steve Elwell Country Kitchen Limited Late Model. His performance in the ride, that was totally new to him, was at fist non-descript. That is until lap eight in the feature. The well learned second generation driver to dad Al 'Bodee' Bodenhamer, Jason found the right spot to set sail and every lap thereafter using the high side of turn two to blast by the leaders one by one. He won the event by one-quarter of a lap. In the meantime, his modified suffered unfixable mechanical woes, keeping him from running in those features. Toby Ott, Daren 'rookie' Rapp, Buddy Blain and John Baker followed Bodenhamer across the line to fill in the top five.

LLM points leader Kevin 'kid' Coyne from Blue Springs had his three consecutive win streak snapped when his MSD unit quit putting out 'spark-power' on lap three.

Last season, Independence's Bob King grabbed CARB 'Rookie of the Year" laurels, won three features and third in points. He moved to Modifieds this year, turning his trusty machine over to older 'rookie' brother Fred King. After lapped-traffic misfortune hit race long leader and point topper in the Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stocks, Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, and with only a lap and a half to go , King inherited the lead and his first-ever victory. Wayne Harper was a close second, third was nabbed by Steve Hammons after starting way back in in 19th, Wheeler put in a quick-fix drive to recover in fourth and always-steady Cole Wimmer came out fifth.

On the sixth lap of the Street Stock run, long time CMS veteran Shorty Fricke from Higginsville rode the back straight wall then flipped over once. He was okay and the car was but slightly damaged.

Kenny Potter had three feature wins heading into the Odessa Poll, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car main, and had to fly low to keep points leader Joe Chevalier behind him and garner his fourth such win this season. Chevalier held the points lead with a two-car length second, third was brother Matt 'the hat' Chevalier, who took over the reigns of his father's car for the night, consistent Jimmy Garner took a decisive fourth while Kelly Potter capped the top five.

In victory circle after each feature win, Budweiser Racing gals Bethany Crane and Jessie Kotanich handed out the hardware to the smiling winners.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

It was a surprise to all of us when we discovered that Time/Warner's Metro Sports' crew was on hand, headed by Mike Kraft (who happens to be the nephew of long time retired racing veteran Charlie Kraft, who always drove the 'cheese colored number 4). The crew taped interviews and lots of track action. It’s to appear on cable this coming Tuesday at 5:30 pm, and repeated again on the following Sunday (August 2nd) at 9:30 am. It's listed as channel 30 on the Kansas City, Missouri T.V. charts.

The Ponderosa Steakhouse in Blue Springs will be holding a special Driver Appreciation Night this Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 pm. All racers that bring their mounts to the showing will receive a free dinner along with the kids. Sounds like a great thing to do half-way between the racing weekends. There'll also be a free moonwalk for the kids plus a Winston Cup car on display. Best way to find it is to take the Highway 7 exit off I-70 then go south to old 40 highway. I'll be there for sure!

With Modified points leader Jason 'trouble' Thompson falling out early in the 'B' due to 'sparking' mechanical problems, then Alan Deatherage having car problems that also put him on the sidelines, the points battle in the premier class has really tightened up to a very close challenge. Refer to the top ten below, and I'll bet you'll agree the rest of the season will be back and forth like it always is. Deatherage is now back in the lead…. by ONE whole point!…., Thompson a close second with others breathing down their necks. Both leaders, by the way, come from Concordia.

Everyone was sure the track would just have to go 'dry-slick' cause of the very hot and night-breeze weather, but Earl Walls and maintenance guru Jerry Boeh were able to keep it moist and quick. They're not letting it known how they did it! Now, if it'll just rain as forecast during the week, that first turn with all the new dirt should settle and finally grade-off smooth. It didn't seem to slow anyone anyway.

As has always been in the hot 'dog-days' of the season, sometimes the advertised starting time may get set back by about 15 to 20 minutes. More water, more packing, more time. It makes the entire show, though, get a done much quicker. Anybody out there that likes dusty tracks with yellow flags every lap? Didn't think so.

The super-hot action moves to this Saturday night for "Pepsi's Race Night #2". All four classes will again be back in action.
