MUSKOGEE, Okla. (March 18) – If you watch even a little bit of television, you’ve probably seen a lot of commercials lately featuring cellular phone companies bickering over which service offers the most powerful and fastest 3G Network.
As of today, the United States Modified Touring Series has its own lightning-fast 3G Network … sort of.
When team owner Ed Gressel and his Gressel Racing team pulls into the Outlaw Motor Speedway this Friday, he’ll have a new driver in his stable behind wheel of one of his USMTS Modifieds and his long-time driver Scott Green will have a new teammate.
Ryan Gustin, the 19-year-old from Marshalltown, Iowa, who came within 33 points of denying Kelly Shryock his ninth USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour title in 2009, will pilot a second car for Gressel beginning this weekend.
“We’ve been impressed watching Ryan these last couple of years,” said Gressel. “He’s been down here all week working on the car and getting ready for this week. We’re happy to have him on board.”
On Aug. 28, 2008, Gustin’s win at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, made him the youngest winner in USMTS history at 17 years, 10 months and 13 days old. He followed that up with six wins during the 2009 campaign where he finished second in points, sandwiched right between Shryock and Jason Hughes — the two winningest drivers in USMTS history.
“This is a great team and I can’t thank Ed and Cinde (Gressel, Ed’s wife) enough for giving me this opportunity,” Gustin said. “I might drive my own car for the Central Region races, but right now the plan is to run for Ed in the Southern Series and the other regions of the National Tour.”
Green teamed up with Gressel Racing five years ago, and became a regular fixture on the grueling USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour in 2007, winning the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year Award in the same year.
“I always wanted to race with Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Jon Tesch, Al Hejna, Corey Dripps and others, but at the time they were just names to me,” Green revealed. “Getting to know those and others that run USMTS is one of the neatest things about racing for Ed.”
Green will be in his traditional white, blue and gold #25 Modified this weekend while Gustin will be piloting a similar-looking machine wrapped black, blue and gold behind his familiar #19 embellished on the door.
The mud-slinging Modifieds of the USMTS invade the Sooner State for a doubleheader this Friday, March 19, at the Outlaw Motor Speedway and Saturday, March 20, at the West Siloam Speedway.
Both events are expected to attract a powerful field of entries as coveted points are awarded for both the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour and USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series – the only events on the 2010 calendar featuring both campaigns.
Other USMTS drivers expected for this weekend’s shows include points leader Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Brian Bolin, Johnny Bone Jr., John Allen, Dan Daniels, Mark Dotson, Tommy Weder Jr., Dereck Ramirez, Zack VanderBeek, John O Whittington, Bumper Jones, Morgan Bagley, Shane Hebert, Steve Holzkamper, Jon Tesch, Rodney Sanders, Randy Timms, Grant Junghans, Chase Junghans, Johnny Scott, Bryan Rowland, Steven Whiteaker Jr., Howard Willis, Dustin Hyde, Brandon Davis, Lee Patton, Ryan Whitworth, Mark Noble, Rick Beebe, Tristan Dycus, Melvin Pilcher, Tracy Denby Jr., Colt Mather, Jon Mitchell, Austin Siebert, David Horner, Lucas Conley, Darrel Dawson, Nic Bidinger, Shane Killingsworth, Chris Deaton, Steve Miller, Mickey Burrell, Kyle Schmidt, Josh Griggs, Shawn Stephenson, Gary Langworthy Jr., Wes Armstrong, Kevin and Kenny Battarbee, Danny Charles, Mark Smith, Jay Sale, Danny Barringer, Cody Smith, Jeremy Gossett, Ben Stephens, Rory Jordan, Troy Seidl, Jerry Standifer, Nathan Bischel, Derick Grigsby, Kyle Anderson, Brent Nicholas, Randy Heston, Brad Lasater, John Webb, Chris Henigan, Hunter Rasdon, Steve Pugh, Jeff Wood and more.
