PENTON, AL – David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN picked up his fourth straight StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series win on Friday night in the 40-lap feature race at Penton Raceway driving the Dixon Plumbing Mastersbilt. Gentry led wire-to-wire for his sixth series win of the season, and his fifth in the last six races.

Gentry did not have all clear sailing, as he had to stop short of a lapped car that spun in front of him in turn two on lap 18. Gentry was able to restart on the point, and continued to maintain a half straightaway lead on his nearest pursuer. Gentry started the race from the pole position by virtue of winning the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash.

Frankie Beard of Hartwell, GA ended up in the second spot driving the Old 29 Golf Carts Barry Wright after the apparent second, third, and fourth-place finishers did not make the post-race weight requirements. Beard was the Rookie of the Race.

Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL in the All-Star Graphics GRT crossed the stripe in second followed by Larry Boutwell of Baker, FL in the McLeod Construction TNT, and Anthony Meadows of Lanett, AL in the Fuller Logging GRT. All three were light at the scales. That moved Ricky Williams of Fayetteville, GA up to third spot in the M&S Racing Rayburn.

Zach Nichols of Cedartown, GA was fourth in the B&B Specialized Hauling/Kimble Shell GRT, and Jordy Nipper of Gray, GA took the fifth position in the Scotty’s Muffler Newman. Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN finished sixth in the S&S Millwright Barry Wright, and Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA drove the J.L. Brooks Construction Warrior to seventh-place.

Larry Eldridge of Columbus, GA was eighth in the Arctic Cat Warrior, and Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA finished ninth in the Summerville Junkyard Mastersbilt. Aubrey Merritt of Carrollton, GA rounded out the top ten in the CM Grading GRT.

Derrick Rainy of Powder Springs, GA started 24th, and made the field as an alternate when Chris Jones of Alabaster, AL could not start the main event in the A To Z Auto GRT. Rainey drove his Dixon Hauling and Grading Rocket to a 13th-place finish to earn the NeSmith Chevrolet Hard Charger Award.

Williams took the lead at the start of the race from the outside front row starting spot, but the start was called off by a caution flag when Buckingham, Fields, and Beard tangled in turn two. Gentry took the lead on the complete restart followed by Williams, Knowles, Meadows, and Boutwell.

Early in the race, Williams faded back to the sixth spot, as Knowles moved up to second on lap two, Meadows climbed into the third spot on lap three, and Boutwell and Beard got around Williams for fourth and fifth respectively on lap four.

Just as Gentry began to encounter lapped traffic on lap eight, the caution flag came out for Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA with a flat left-rear tire on his Turner Excavating Hicks. After the field went back to green flag action, Gentry was able to pull out to a half straightaway lead over Knowles by lap 15.

The caution flag came out again on lap 18 when Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA spun the All South Racing Products Warrior in turn two right in front of Gentry. The leader was able to stop on the track and avoid any damage to his race car. Because Gentry stopped to avoid the crash, he was put back on the point for the restart.

During the caution period, Smith bumped Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS in the Columbus Speedway GRT. Stokes retaliated under the caution flag, and spun Smith out. StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series officials sent both drivers to the pit area for the rest of the evening.

After the restart, Boutwell passed Meadows for the third spot, as Gentry pulled away. The caution flag came out on lap 35 when Robert Gant of Flat Rock, AL spun the Bullet Performance Engines Mastersbilt powered by the R&D Ford Crate engine. Gant was running tenth at the time of the spin.

Earlier in the evening, Gant turned heads as he drove the Ford to fast time honors among the 44 entrants with a lap around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 14.831 seconds for an average speed of 91.026 miles per hour.

Gentry pulled away on the restart, and took the checkered flag with a half straightaway margin of victory. A total of 17 cars finished the race on the lead lap.

The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series travels to Thunder Mountain Speedway in Fyffe, AL on Saturday night for a 40-lap $2,500-to-win event.
