Inside Line Promotions - NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2020) - Giovanni Scelzi enjoyed a successful start to his season, which began in sunny Florida with a trio of pavement late model races at New Smyrna Speedway.

Scelzi drove for Mark Kraus during three nights of the World Series of Asphalt spectacle, which provided an opportunity to gain experience around the high-banked oval prior to Scelzi's NASCAR ARCA Menards Series debut for Bill McAnally Racing.

"Everything was new," Scelzi said. "You're trying to absorb everything and learn, but at the same time you're racing. Overall we had a good showing. It was a solid three days of racing and I learned a lot."

Scelzi scored back-to-back eighth-place finishes on Feb. 7-8 during his first two nights with the team before his breakout performance on Feb. 9.

"We qualified ninth quickest so we missed the feature inversion by one," he said. "I started ninth and picked them off one by one. We got into sixth on a restart and then kept getting through there until we were third in the closing laps. I was the most aggressive of the weekend and had the best restarts of the weekend. We were probably going to finish third, which was a solid result, but the top two got together and we won."

Scelzi's feature victory was his second pavement win in four career races.

"It's the most I've learned in a short time," he said. "From how you run the car to how you use the brake to how you sit in the car, it's just a foreign feeling to me. Restarts, shifting, a different transmission, there's so much to take in. I felt like I did a good job, but it could always be better. Building confidence and comfort is huge and the progress we made all weekend was big for both."

Scelzi followed up the impressive win by posting a 13th-place result during his ARCA debut on Feb. 10.

Scelzi kicks off the ARCA Menards Series West season this Thursday at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nev., before starting his sprint car schedule in his family owned car Feb. 28-29 at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
