MADISON, Ill. – It was announced today Gateway International Raceway will host the NHRA Midwest Nationals on the first weekend in May (April 30-May 2) in 2010. Next year represents the 14th Annual trip to GIR by the NHRA Full Throttle Series, a sanction that continues to be a highlight on the multi-purpose motorsports facility’s schedule.
The 2009 race at Gateway was one of the most successful on the NHRA Full Throttle Series’ schedule.“The NHRA recognizes the great fans we have here at Gateway,” said GIR Vice President and General Manager Lenny Batycki. “We had people waiting in the rain here, hoping to get in and see great racers like John Force, Antron Brown, Jeg Coughlin, Jr., and all the rest of the NHRA Full Throttle Series teams compete at our facility. That tells us that we have some of the most loyal fans in the country.
“We are very pleased to retain the same calendar weekend we’ve had for the last few years. It enables us to provide continuity to our fans and it’s been a date we’ve had a lot of success with.”
The NHRA Full Throttle Series will once again begin and end its season in Pomona, Calif., with the season-opening Winternationals scheduled for Feb. 11-14, 2010, and the season finale slated for Nov. 11-14. GIR’s sister track, Memphis Motorsports Park, has exchanged dates with Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Penn., and will host the NHRA Mid-South Nationals Aug. 20-22. The major change to the schedule is the SMI-owned drag strip in Charlotte, N.C., being awarded a second event, taking the date formerly held for the Virginia NHRA Nationals in Richmond, Va.
