CARTERSVILLE, GA – GM Performance officials on Tuesday confirmed the legality of the camshafts from the top two finishing cars in Saturday night’s Jasper Engines Crate Racin’ USA World Championship Race Presented By American Race Tire for the StormPay.com Dirt late Model Series were legal.

Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN, driver of the Goddard Performance Warrior “House Car”, was declared the official winner of the race, and awarded the $10,000 top prize. Rodney Melvin of Benton, IL was awarded the second place prize of $5,000 for the runner-up spot driving the Rick’s Towing Rayburn.

StormPay.com Dirt Racing Series officials sent the two camshafts to GM Performance on Monday for specification verification, following the post-race inspection that went into the wee hours of Sunday morning. What turned out to be a faulty degree wheel used during the post-race inspection to measure the cam lift and duration necessitated the confirmation from GM Performance.

“During the tech process, everything checked out O.K., but we just didn’t get a consistent reading from our brand new out-of-the-box degree wheel to make a call on the camshafts,” Series Director Mike Vaughn said. “With so much on the line with the richest StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series event ever run, we felt it was necessary to confiscate both camshafts and ask GM Performance to take a look at the camshafts.”

GM Performance welcomed the opportunity to work with the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series in making sure everything checked out with the post-race inspection.

“Not only was this an important event for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series, but it was also a high-profile event for our crate engine program, so we also wanted make sure everything checked out, and we were more than happy to help the series,” GM Performance Parts Special Programs Manager Bill Martens said. “The two camshafts were checked at a GM Performance Parts-approved facility. They both checked out to be 100 percent correct, and verified to meet GM blueprint manufacturing specifications.”

The faulty degree wheel was discovered on Tuesday afternoon after GM Performance personnel released their findings on Tuesday morning.

“We would to thank both teams for their professionalism, cooperation and understanding in resolving this issue,” Vaughn said. “We congratulate both Jimmy Owens and Rodney Melvin on their great runs in the Jasper Engines Crate Racin’ USA World Championship Race Presented By American Race Tire for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series.”

The next event for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series will be the first 2006 points race of the 24-race National Championship season at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL with the 16th Annual Ice Bowl on January 7-8.
