Inside Line Promotions - PHENIX CITY, Ala. (June 17, 2014) - Derek Hagar has already tied his season high with 10 feature victories as he embarks upon one of the greatest opportunities of his career.
Hagar is headed to Ohio to compete in the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Ohio Speedweek, which showcases nine races in as many days at eight different tracks.
Hagar will drive for Pete Grove with Andy Potter as the crew chief, which is a combination that helped propel NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to stardom when they won multiple races during the 2006 Ohio Speedweek.
"We've got a good opportunity here," Hagar said. "Any time I hear about Andy Potter it's good things. We've got a winning crew. We're putting a brand new car together. There's no excuse. My expectation is to go out there and be competitive and try to win races. I don't have very much 410 experience, but we have nine races to get used to the different motor."
Hagar is coming off another impressive performance last Saturday when he powered the Jay Hancock entry to victory during the USCS Randy Helton Memorial at East Alabama Motor Speedway.
"That car is a 1999 or 2000 car," Hagar said. "It only goes out once or twice a year. He didn't race at all last year."
The team had some issues to overcome early as the fuel block was leaking in hot laps. Once adjustments were made, Hagar led his entire heat race for the win. That started him on the inside of the second row for the 27-lap feature.
"The front row got together on the second restart and it moved me to the front row outside," he said. "I took the lead going into turn one and led every lap. It was pretty smooth sailing until about halfway through and the motor started letting go. It was starting to slow down and it had a real bad vibration. We were lucky to make it."
Hagar was able to maintain the top spot until he took the checkered flag, which was his fourth consecutive USCS win and his 27[sup]th[/sup] career victory with the series. He also became the first driver to claim the Randy Helton Memorial twice after winning the race last year.
Only 14 races into this season, Hagar's 10[sup]th[/sup] triumph tied his career high of victories that was established last year.
