Inside Line Promotions - TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 18, 2022) - Derek Hagar is eager to return to the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire.

Hagar and car owner Shawn Wood ended the 36th edition of the famed midget event last weekend by transferring through an F Main and ending three positions shy of a transfer in an E Main.

"It's hard to take a car that you've built off your imagination, not knowing what it really needs," Hagar said. "The last two years Shawn has built me a good car. Last year we finished one spot out of making Saturday's A Main. I know this car is better than what we had last year. I could run the cushion and the bottom and it made speed. I'm really looking forward to next year's event. I wish it was this weekend."

Hagar kicked off this year's Chili Bowl Midget Nationals a week ago Tuesday when he finished where he started - second - in a heat race after an ominous start to the night.

"We had some issues on our qualifying night with the steering gear falling out in hot laps," he said. "We had to rig it up to finish out the night. We had to thrash to get that ready and just about missed the heat race. They built a good car. We had plenty of drive. We were just having trouble keeping the front end on the ground during the heat race and let (Buddy) Kofoid by us."

Hagar rebounded from a spin in a qualifier to finish sixth. A similar situation occurred in the B Main, leaving Hagar two positions away from making the main event.

"We had a decent car, maybe a little on the free side in the qualifier," he said. "I looped it around going into turn three. I passed some cars, but it wasn't good enough to get us locked into the A Main.

"We had a really, really good car, especially in the B Main. I spun out trying to keep from hitting a car that was taking everyone out in the B Main. I came from the back and ran sixth. We were making some good laps. I wished we wouldn't have been in that position because I think we could have raced our way through the field."

Hagar lined up on the inside of the third row in an F Main on Saturday. He gained a trio of positions to finish second, transferring into the back of an E Main.

"We made some adjustments and the race car was really nice," he said. "Shawn and Cody Hays built us a good car. It just took us a minute to get it figured out.

"We passed some really good cars in the F Main. We drove around (J.J.) Yeley and stayed with (Logan) Seavey. That put us in the back of the E Main. We made a gear change and some setup changes. We started squirting up through there and passed a lot of good cars again, just falling a couple spots short."

Hagar's rally from 15th to eighth was three positions out of transferring into a D Main.
