Corpus Christi, Tx.,(Dec. 3Rd, 2010) Capping off the 2010 dirt track season, South Texas Speedway held it's South Texas Shootout for Limited Modifieds featuring $4,500 to win Saturday nights 45-lap A-main. The race drew several of the big name drivers from Louisiana, Oklahoma and the metroplex to do battle with the south Texas area's best on the ¼ mile, semi-banked, clay oval.

Friday night's action included heats, B-mains and an A-Qualifier to lock in the top eight drivers for Saturday nights finale. The local Go-Karts also ran as a support class for the show.

Hebert Holds On During Last Lap Scramble
Local hot shoe, Steve Whiteaker jr and Louisiana's Shane Hebert looked to be the class of the field as they showed their dominance. S. Hebert got by Whiteaker jr. late in the 30-lap feature and appeared to be a runaway winner, until the final lap. S. Hebert lost a right rear tire just as he took the white flag, but Whiteaker jr. slowed behind him. Paul White and Steve Whiteaker sr. then battled for the lead making contact in the final corners. S. Hebert, driving the Specialty Automotive, Showtime Signs, American Standard, Majestic Metals, Day Motorsports, Express Race Cars was able to nurse his wounded mount by both and limp to the finish line.

As green waved on the 24-car field Whiteaker jr. jumped into the lead, with S. Hebert getting by White for second while Randy Timms, Michael Walker and Adam Schach ran three wide for fifth. Dustin Butcher brought a yellow on lap 2 looping his ride in turn 1. Under caution EJ Gilpin broke and rolled to a stop on the front stretch. S. Hebert and White both gave Whiteaker jr. a look on the restart, but JJ Jennings spun off turn 2 to bring the yellow quickly back out.

Finally back under green again Danny Hebert and Timms ran side by side for 5th, while Sean Jones made his way up to seventh. Whiteaker sr. took a look under White on lap 4, as Lawrence Mikulencak snuck past Schach for the eighth spot. By lap 10 Whiteaker jr. had pulled ahead to a good margin as the top four spread out leaving D. Hebert, Timms, Jones and Mikulencak battling for fifth.

Coming to the crossed flags S. Hebert had cut into Whiteaker's lead with White, Whiteaker sr. and D. Hebert rounding out the top five. Butcher went around again on lap 16 to bring out a yellow and rebunch the field. On the restart Whiteaker jr. and S. Hebert eased away with 3rd through 14th running nose to tail. Whiteaker jr. slipped in turn 2 giving S. Hebert a run, but James Myers and Dean Hollier tangled in turn 2 to bring out a yellow.

As Whiteaker jr. and S. Hebert again pulled out from the pack on green, Whiteaker sr. took another peek low on White for third. S. Hebert kept the pressure on Whiteaker jr. and was able to duck inside and take the lead on lap 25 as the fight for fifth continued among seven drivers. With two to go, S. Hebert had built an eight-car advantage and looked to be well on his way to an easy victory.

But racing fate can take some strange twists and tonight would be no exception. As S. Hebert took the white flag the right rear tire let go. S. Hebert slowed, with Whiteaker jr. slowing behind him. White and Whiteaker sr. both got by but then got together in turns 3-4 sending White around and Whiteaker sr. up the track. S. Hebert found himself back out front limping to the checkers followed by D, Hebert. Whiteaker sr. recovered for third, while White and Whiteaker jr. fell out of transfer spots.

“With about four or five to go I could feel the car shaking a little,” replied S. Hebert. “Sure enough on the last lap the tire let go. I just held on, held my line and stayed as straight as I could. I still don't know how, but I came home with the checkered flag.”

“(Steve)Whiteaker jr. was going good the first half of the race. The longer the green flag run I could catch up to him. I wasn't going to pressure him too hard figuring I'd have good starting spot. He seemed to get tighter while my car got freer and I caught him and had the opportunity to pass him and got by.”

“That was an old tire we had on there. We knew the track was going to rubber up off the corners. Tomorrow we'll probably put on a new on or scuff on in during hot laps. I think I ran over some debris about halfway through the race. It looks like it might be cut. So I hope it was just a combination of low air pressure and overheating the tires.”

“I'm not going to cut Danny(Hebert) any slack on the start. I'm going make sure I run as hard as I can the first lap and get out front. Once you get out front you know they have to pass you. I can just run my line and be easier on the tires than someone that's trying to run me down”

“I don't now what happened(on the last lap),” commented Jones. “I just looked at it as two more positions. I saw two cars going up the track, so I went to the bottom.”

“I saw cars going this way, so I went that way,” added Mikulencak.
