Riley Herman finally got his win. For the first time in his six-year racing career, Herman took the checkered flag in Saturday’s 20-lap Modified Feature at Peoria Speedway.
“I’ve been the bridesmaid for so long,” said Herman, who drives the No. 27 Pekin Welders car. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a little kid watching these races. These guys sure make you earn it.”
The race finally got going after five cautions and three multiple car crashes eliminated eight of the starting 20 drivers before six official laps more even completed.
On a cool and windy night, Herman led the first nine laps before relinquishing the lead to David Baker. Baker led Laps 10-15 before Herman grabbed the lead on Lap 16.
“That wind had been haunting me like a crazy ex-girlfriend,” Herman said.
The Late Model feature was won by Frank Heckenast Jr. He didn’t take the lead until Turn 4 of Lap 24 off a caution.
“That caution really helped me,” Heckenast said. “It took me awhile to figure the track but I think this track is awesome.”
Doug Sauder made some adjustments from the heat races to win the 12-lap Pro-Street Stock Feature. He says he switched to the two-barrel carburetor for the feature after finishing third in Heat 2.
“We just tighten the car up,” said Sauder, who credited his son and crew chief, Barry for the adjustments. “It was a slick track and we step the car up for that.”
Sauder, who was riding in the No. 289 car, started off in the poll position and held off the other eight drivers for his first victory of the young season.
In an unusual Limited Late Model Feature, Joe Markle in the 18J car took the 15-lap win by beating just three others.
The race started with seven drivers but after just three laps and two cautions, only four drivers remained.
“I didn’t pay attention to the drivers behind me,” said Markle.
In the 10-lap Hornet, a number of cautions plagued the early laps of the race but Eric Wisher was able to lead the entire race. He said the slick track worked in his favor.
“Another than that my car is brand new, I have still have some things to tune,’ Wisher said, ‘but this track does fit more of my driving style.”
