ATOMIC CITY, Idaho (March 18) – Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod drivers didn’t have to wait long to learn of a second Idaho track adding the division this season.

Saturday night race programs at Atomic Motor Raceway will feature the IMCA class. Idaho Falls Raceway had announced earlier it would run Southern SportMods as part of its Friday shows.

“I think this division is really going to take off around here,” predicted Atomic promoter Clement Metz. “We started our 125 QRC go kart class last year and went from three cars to 11. I’m sure we’ll do the same thing with the SportMods.”

Atomic already sanctions its Modifieds with IMCA. Southern SportMods were on the program when the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Modified Tour came to town last fall.

Drivers who had SportMods built competed with local street stocks at Atomic in 2009.

“Two of the best things about this class are the economics and the suspension,” Metz said. “They can’t do much with the suspension and that’s what separates the higher dollar guys and the guys who work all week and come to the track on the weekend,”

Opening night at Atomic City is May 8. Southern SportMods will run both nights of the Wild West Modified Tour twinbill Sept. 17-18 before the season ends Sept. 25.
