INDIANAPOLIS (April 28, 2009) – The World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Series schedule challenges drivers and teams in every way imaginable, from the grueling night-after-night racing in different states to adjusting from short tracks to big tracks in less than 24 hours.
This weekend, Tony Stewart Racing’s (TSR) Kraig Kinser and the Bass Pro Shops team will get another taste of Outlaw-style life on the road with a Friday-Saturday doubleheader. Kinser will race the TSR No. 20 Bass Pro Shops/Chevy/J.D. Byrider Maxim on Friday night at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., and then on Saturday will return to legendary Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway.
It’s the perfect mix of venues that reflects just how tough the Outlaw series can be. Huset’s is short-track racing at its best, presenting drivers with the challenge of fighting it out on a tight, 3/8-mile dirt oval that features high-banked corners and a daunting outer concrete wall that keeps every driver on his toes. Saturday’s return to Knoxville Raceway offers high speeds and a wide surface with multiple racing grooves at a tradition-rich facility that hosts the sport’s biggest annual race in August.
Friday’s race at Huset’s will be Kinser’s fourth time competing on the track. Last season, he finished 21st in June and 16th in July. His best effort came in his first visit to the track back in June 2005, when he scored a runner-up finish.
That second-place finish came just four days after he won his first career feature event at Knoxville Raceway. His second win at the track came two months later in August 2005, when he scored a historic triumph by winning the 2005 Knoxville Nationals A-Main and took home the $140,000 winner’s share. Kinser has made 18 starts at the central Iowa speed plant, including three last season, when he finished 14th and 11th in WoO events in May and June before finishing 11th in the Knoxville Nationals second preliminary feature event.
Following last weekend’s short-track action in Arkansas and Indiana, 14 of the 84 scheduled 2009 WoO race dates have been completed. Kinser has three top-five finishes and six top-10s and currently ranks 11th in the WoO Sprint Series championship standings with 1,786 points.

“Racing at Huset's can be pretty tough. The wall on the outside really makes it feel narrow getting out of the corners and heading down the straightaways. There a lot of nights when you have to be right on that wall, so having a good-handling car is really key. It’s one of things you have to have to succeed there.
“The other key is being in the right position. You have to qualify in the right spot. Passing can be tough early in the night, so you have to be either one of the fastest two cars in qualifying or be on the front row of a heat.
“The Bass Pro Shops team (Mike Cool, Steve Swenson, and Bob Curtis) have continued to give me a good car and last weekend we were able to take advantage of a good heat result. It put us up front in the dash and the feature, so now our goal is to be able to take it one step further and succeed in the feature.”
One word in Sprint car racing that gets everyone’s attention is “Knoxville.” This Saturday, you get the first of two chances to race there before the Knoxville Nationals in August. There are a lot of races between May 2 and August 12, so what are you trying to accomplish on Saturday?
“There is a little extra motivation to do well at Knoxville. You want to win wherever you race, but the place has so much tradition that, any time you pull into to victory lane, it’s a big deal.
“I’m not sure if any of the other guys think the way I do, but I'm always trying to learn something that can make me better at the Nationals. Winning the Nationals proved to me that I could win a big race, but it also helped me learn that you have to be ready for anything and everything.
“So that’s my goal for the weekend. Do everything we can to get this Bass Pro Shops car in contention for top-five finishes and, ultimately, wins. Be the best we can in qualifying, race as hard as we can in the heat races, and find a way to be in the battle at the end of the night.”
