by Ron Lueck - 24 Raceway, Moberly, MO: With only two days between race nights at 24 Raceway this last week, all five of the regular classes got a race in for the weekend of June 26th, with the Sportsman and Hobby Stock classes each getting two feature starts on both Thursday and Saturday.

RACE REPORT: The front row pole sitters for the A-modifieds, Kevin Blackburn, Jr. and David Holder, both had the rides to beat as these two battled both high and low on the track for the lead. Blackburn led the first 14 laps and thru three cautions. But on the 15th lap, Holder got a good run coming out of turn 4 and nipped Blackburn at the line. Holder held the lead for the final laps to take the win. Steve Grotz also came with Holder to grab 2nd just after crossing the line on a lap 16 pass. And on the final lap, Matt Dotson who had also stayed near the front, got by Blackburn to take over 3rd place and finish just in front him. Jeff Rash rounded out the top five.

Clayton Crump once again ran out front for the entire 25 laps in the Hobby Stock Special, followed by Jamie Bevill. On lap 4 on the backstretch, Bevill and Crump could trade places, but Crump managed to regain the lead before getting back to the line. By lap 13, the leaders had spread out a good amount with Crump leading, Bevill next and then Jerry Warren running in 3rd. The finishing order of Crump, Jamie Bevill, Warren, Stewart Burton, and Blake Hultz was about to be shook up after the finish. During the technical inspection process, both Crump's and Jamie Bevill's Hobbys didn't pass their respective tech inspections, according to track rules based in large part on IMCA rules. This bumped Warren into first place, moved Burton and Hultz up a couple of places, and saw Justin Burton and Justin Bevill complete the top five for the Special.

In B-modified competition, longtime racers at 24 Raceway, Kelly Smith and Bob Woodrow, both won their heats and started alongside each other on the front row. Smith took the lead for the first three laps, but Gary Wilson kept moving up thru the pack and took over the lead on the 4th lap and never looked back. Smith ran in 2nd the rest of the way, following Wilson around the half mile. But in the end, Kiel Erwin moved into 2nd at the finish line and relegated Smith to 3rd. Kevin Embree got as high in the order as 3rd early on in the 15-lap race, but fell back to finish 4th and ahead of Tom Elsen. Erwin still leads the season in points by 2 over Embree and just 6 points over Wilson.
Chad Walter won the Sportsman race by leading the 2nd half of the 12-lap race, after first half leader Jeff Creed smoked an engine at the midpoint. This was the 2nd engine used up in two days for Creed, making it an expensive week. Walter now has the lead in the season points by 30 over Derrick Agee. Butch Bailey got the runner up finish, then Rick Girard, Agee, and younger brother Cody Agee. Running three wide at times, this class puts on a good show with a lot of lead changes in some competitive racing.
In the 4 cylinder Hornet class, a new face emerged as the winner: John Baker, aka JB. Robert Winfrey started on the front row and led for 9 laps until Devin Still tapped him, got him loose enough and made the pass to the front on lap 10. After the third caution for the night's first feature race, the green-white-checker finish was set up with Still in front of Winfrey, then JB and Richard Doctorian. On the white flag lap, Baker got a good run out of turn 2 to blast past both Still and Winfrey on the backstretch and take the lead all the way around to the finish line for his first ever victory. Coming out of turn 4 to the line, and both fighting to get to the front, Winfrey returned the favor and tapped Still. This action got Still loose enough and Winfrey took back 2nd place, as Still fell a couple of spots back to finish 4th, just behind cousin Andrew Hurley.
