Farmington, MO (Aug 14) -- Members of Larry Heisel Rentals were in the right place Saturday night and Jimmy Hurley was in the right place at the right time too. Starting outside the front row, Hurley would chase Tim Montgomery into turn one. Montgomery got a great jump off the corner and put a large amount of real estate between himself and Hurley. Steve Short and Keith Burch also gave pursuit. Caution waved quickly in the event as Brad Yoder lost power in his car and was unable to make it to the infield area. On the restart Montgomery again pulled away from the field. A second caution appeared for a tangle between Jason Hunt and Tierney Cooper. Hunt would be finished for the night with Cooper going on for a tenth place finish. On this caution period the leader Montgomery pulled his car to the front straight and stopped. Once he stopped he would have been placed on the tail. However, he was unable to continue due to mechanical issues. Hurley assumed the lead on Lap 7 and was never headed. After crossing the finish line first Hurley coasted to a stop on the back straight. He later revealed that he had no brakes for the final 23 laps. Another fine win for the driver from Springfield, IL. He will increase his lead in the points with just a few weeks remaining. Steve Short, Joey Montgomery, Keith Burch and Joey Boyd complete the top five.
The Modified A Division found the usual suspects at the front of the field. Billy Smith, Brent Thompson, and Jeremy Greenwalt. These three would set the tone for the event from the drop of the green. Thompson got the jump on the group and headed into turn one with the lead. He would hold serve for two laps before being overtaken by Smith. A relative “newcomer”, Mike Francis got into the mix for a few laps. Francis of course is no stranger to the track, but has curtailed his racing in 2010. Billy Joe Beard found his way to his best finish of the season in fourth. Jonathan Self also had his best finish of 2010, by placing fifth.
The Modified B Division is a toss up between Mike Savage and Kenny Harris for the Championship this season. Harris entered the night with a 26 point lead over Savage. So Savage did what you are supposed to do. He won the feature, Harris finished fifth and he closed the gap from the 26 points down to 16 with a few weeks remaining. Shane Blair made a great effort to get his first win in the division by starting on the pole and leading the first two circuits. Blair hung on for a top five finish in fourth. Brian Richards the runner-up on this night had to wait on lapped traffic to go past the cone before he could get a chance to catch Savage. Mike did a masterful job at playing the lapped car on restarts. Richards just ran out of laps tonight. Eddie Gross, also a winner this season, settled for a third place finish and Kenny Harris finished fifth.
Pure Street Division driver Charlie Savage driving the Dom Wadlow Excavating / Mike Lucy Auto Sales entry claimed another victory. He jumped to the lead over Chris Boyd, Kodi Savage and Jimmy Farris. One caution slowed the event as Brian Blair hit the wall at the head of the stretch. He was able to continue, come from the back of the field and finish fourth. The winner, Savage, was followed over the line by Boyd, Kodi Savage, Blair and Jimmy Farris for top five honors.
Also in the house for the evening are the drivers of the Gateway Vintage Racing Association. Club Officers Marc McClintock and Brian Wolfmeier brought the group down for a run. They were rained out earlier in the season. This date was found to be acceptable for both the track and the club. Nineteen drivers came out in support and put on a great show for the fans. Cliff Hensley was the winning driver on this night. He powered his way to the win in a Plymouth Baracuda with a slant six motor. Hinsley told the crowd this was only his second time in the car. Brian Wolfmeier, club Vice-President, makes it to the runner-up slot, followed by club President Marc McClintock. Fourth place goes to George McClintock with Dean Adams, Jr completing the top five. The group is unique and has a good following. Cars range for the 1930’s and up.
