Farmington, MO (July 10) – Five dollar grandstand admission and J-98 Radio always make a good combination for racing. The East Central Missouri Shriners were on hand as well for the evenings festivities.
Jimmy Hurley, Springfield, IL made his way to the winners circle Saturday Night at St Francois County Raceway. His Action Graphics – Miles Chevrolet – MSW Remodeling Sprinter seemed to run strong and without problems. Starting on the front row alongside Tommy Worley, Jr, Hurley jumped to the lead and never lost it. Worley, Jimmy Bridgeman, and fellow Illinoisan A J Bruns chased the winner for several laps. Bruns would get collected in a spin with Tom Dickerman and Casey Barnhouse. A J bounced back for a respectable 8th place finish. Bridgeman was running a very strong third and then mechanical problem hit his mount. This would bring some different face toward the front. Joey Montgomery would be one. Him and Worley tried their best to chase down the leader. On lap 17 of the scheduled 25, something on Montgomery’s car broke and sent him to the pits. Restarting the event found Hurley still at the top followed by Worley in the #88 machine owned by Jeff Wurst. Two laps later the engine on the #88 would go up in smoke and end his night and a chance for another win. Hurley collects his first win of 2010 and told the crowd in post race. They had tried something different and decided to go back to what worked in years past. It paid off with a victory. Hurley was followed to the line by Joey Boyd in second place for his best finish of 2010. Third place honors go to Tim Montgomery with Keith Burch taking position number four and Kasey Burch with a very nice run to finish in the fifth spot. Hurley also turned the “Hat Trick” by winning his heat, the dash and the A-Main.
Not to be out done, Billy Smith, Bonne Terre, MO, turned the trick in the A-Modified Division. By winning the dash, Smith started on the pole position along side Brent Thompson. These two always manage to appear in the same race and the same row often. To pick a winner in this battle would be tough. Tonight Smith had the upper hand as would claim the honors. Surviving more than a few caution periods Smith had 2009 Champion, David Shepard breathing down his neck for part of the event. This was when Thompson was not there hounding the leader. Smith made no mistakes and takes home his fourth win of the season and retains the top of the points chart for the season. Shepard pressured and had to settle for second, Thompson ran short on steam and took third. Fourth goes to Kenny Rumble in the Brad Thurston owned machine and Shannon Blair completes the top five.
Mike Savage and Kenny Harris came into the night tied for the Championship lead. When the dust settled for the night Savage gained a few point over Harris by winning his third feature of the year. Harris kept close, but finished fourth. However, John Bohn looked strong and was headed for a win in the division only to have his motor expire on lap 4. Three cautions were displayed for spinning cars and twice for tires on the speedway. Tires are used for barriers and makers for the drivers. After taking the lead on Lap 4 Savage had a challenge or two before he could collect the win. The “Flying Fenceman”, Shannon Burch had more than one chance to grab the top position, but could not get enough traction to complete the move. He would finish second. Third place goes to Randy Forster, a winner in 2010. Fourth is “The Hustler” Kenny Harris with Brian Richards rounding out the top five.
After a couple of weeks, when luck was not on his side, Chris Boyd put it all back together and finished the package with another win. Feature win #6 did have some close racing as Jimmy Farris stayed in range for a challenge. Eric Sarakas started the night as the point leader, chased Boyd for several laps. He dropped out with problems with the car and a disappointing night. Robbie Wells, Brian Stephens and Jimmy Farris took up the battle for positions two through four. Wells claimed runner-up laurels in his best run of the year. Stephens als had his best run of the season for the show place which is third. Farris made a nice run in his mount to finish fourth and Dusty Homan gets into the top five by placing fifth.
Next Saturday Night the Annual POWRi Micro sprints will be in town. Derek King, Joe B Miller and a whole host of drivers will take their shot at a win in a National Championship contest. Tony Roney of Herculaneum, MO is the defending race winner. Gates open a 4:00. Hot Laps around 6:00 and racing to follow at approximately 7:00.
