The 'Cream of the Crop" of dirt track auto races takes center stage at the 157th annual Illinois State Fair with the Golden Edition of the Tony Bettenhausen 100 for the USAC K&N Silver Crown Championship Series cars on Saturday August 21 and the 48th Allen Crowe 100 featuring the ARCA RE/MAX-Menard's Stock Car Series on Sunday August 22, 2010. Local stars also take to the "World's Fastest Mile Dirt Track" both days with the second leg of the UMP Modified Triple Crown slated for Saturday with the inaugural Illini Dash Saturday and the 17th running of the Sportsman Nationals on Sunday.
Defending Tony Bettenhausen 100 race winner Cole Whitt became the youngest race victor in Illinois State Fair history in 2009 and unfortunately will miss the 50th running of the Bettenhausen 100 as he has moved to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series However, three time Bettenhausen 100 winner Dave Darland and current USAC Silver Crown point leader Bud Kaeding are expected to lead a field of approximately 40 competitors to Springfield for a national championship dirt track tradition that began back in 1934! A number of local competitors are expected in for the 100-mile grind which took the name in memory of the late Tinley Park great who was lost in a practice crash at Indianapolis in 1961. Springfield's own Donnie Beechler and Mike Hess are expected to return to big mile dirt track as is Elkhart's Chris Urish and Galesburg's A.J. Fike.
UMP Modified racers join the Illinois State Fair lineup for the first time but have seen action on the track in the Illinois Fall Nationals race formerly held in September. Two time Fall Nationals modified winner Jeff Leka is an expected entrant for the second leg of the triple crown, the first leg was held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May and won by Ken Schrader and concludes with the Bill Oldani Memorial at DuQuoin on Labor Day.
Sunday the action turns to stock cars and seven time Allen Crowe 100 winner Frank Kimmel headlines a stellar field of fendered machines for the 48th edition of this prestigious memorial event. Like the Bettenhausen, the defending winner of the Crowe 100 has moved on with young Parker Kligerman now in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Current ARCA point leader Justin Marks is looking for his first dirt win while Patrick Sheltra is a dirt late model veteran and one of the favorites to capture his first 100-mile dirt track event. Traditionally a number of local drivers enhance the field with entries and Springfie1d's Kel1y Kovksi is expected for the 48th Crowe 100 as is Centralia's Joe Cooksey, Arenzeville's Mark Littleton and Galesburg's A.J. Fike.
Joining the ARCA cars are the ever popular sportsman stock cars for the 17th running of the Sportsman Nationals. Springfield's Dennis Vandermeersch waited ten years to win his third event in 2008 and backed that up with win number 4 in 2009. He is expected to return and attempt to join Wes O'Dell as one of two five time winners of the event.
