Jimmie Johnson won the Coors Light Pole Award for the Allstate 400 at The Brickyard with a lap of 49.515 seconds, 181.763 mph.

"Only a win on Sunday would make this weekend better," said Johnson.

This is his 15th pole in 239 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and his first at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is his second pole in 2008.

Mark Martin placed second posting his eighth top-10 start of 2008 and his seventh in 15 races at Indianapolis.

"The car wanted to go," said Martin. "When I came out of Turn 4 and down to take the green flag, I thought 'Man, we've got something here."

Ryan Newman finished third and his eighth top-10 start of 2008.

Patrick Carpentier (15th) was the fastest qualifying rookie.

"I think we're getting better and better every race weekend," said Carpentier. "I think tomorrow is going to be good for us. The car is really stable."

The Missouri connection, Jamie McMurray and Carl Edwards, each qualified in the top 10. McMurray qualified in 8th position and Edwards qualified 9th.

"If I could do it again, I would have driven it a little harder," said McMurray. "but it was a pretty solid lap for our car."
