Creve Coeur, Mo - The Champ II / 120 finals at Creve Coeur Lake was a confusing finish for race competitors and fans who could not hear the PA announcer. Jose Mendana had jumped to the lead after a late race restart and cruised to what appeared to be a victory. But he was penalized a lap and finished in fourth place and the real race winner was Jimmy Merleau.

“I did realize he [Mendana] he was penalized,” said Merleau. “On the last laps I wasn’t going to push it”

After the race finish, Jose Mendana, went to the start / finish point to grab the checkered flag for what he thought was going to be a victory lap. When he finally realized he was not victory, he was visibly upset and he gunned the gas and sped away and still did a victory lap.

Eventually the race victor, Merleau, finally came over and grabbed the checkered flag and delighted the fans by doing several circle burnouts near the beach.

“We had a good battle and now I am kind of tired,” said a smiling Merleau.
