May 29, 2009 (Kankakee, IL) For the second week in a row, Mother Nature was kind enough to bless Kankakee County Speedway with a beautiful night for exciting dirt track racing action, as 121 cars in six classes lined the pit area. Despite a slight delay working the tracks surface into race condition, the night went off without a hitch with multiple groove racing keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout the night. Several of the feature events were nail biters with one of the being a photo finish.
The first feature of the night was also the longest as the UMP modifieds survived a caution-filled 20-laps. In the end, it was Gary Cook Jr. taking the checkers ahead of early race leader Mike spatola, Dave Porth, Lance Dehm, and last week's feature winner McKay Wenger. Heat race winners included Wenger, Justin McCoy, Jason Hastings, and Spatola. Consis were taken by Mark Grosvenor and Tom Bell. Fast qualifer Jim Farris (15.108) would destroy his car in the caution filled event after colliding with Tommy Kroll and barrel-rolling several times along the backstretch.
In UMP Late Model action, sixteen late models squared off with Fairbury's Aaron "Jumbo" Ricketts earning his first ever late model feature victory. Ricketts, who also set fast time (14.368), charged to the front from his inside row two starting spot, overtaking early commander Lil' John Provenzano by the midway point of the 25-lap affair. Mike Provenzano then offered up a late race challenge by passing his father for second, then applying the heat to an unsuspecting Ricketts over the final laps in hopes of claiming his first ever win as well. "The Shapiro Hero" Don Hilleary recorded a career best fourth place finish followed by Steve Dimmick. Heat race winners were Guy Volk and John Provenzano.
Thirty-three street stocks were on hand to do battle, with Hebron, IN driver Nate Payton setting the early pace. Payton held command of the race until veteran driver Rick Thomas of Dwight inched his way past Payton at the stripe. It was literally a photo finish to declare the winner. Jay Hamilton, Joel Funk, and Billy Wicker rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Don McCarty, Nate Kroll, and Payton. The consi was won by Wicker.
Kurt Allison won the 15 car I-Mod feature, besting Bob Fortner, Rich Rish, Mike Kingma, and Kenny Carlson. Heat race winners were John Rhodes, and last week's feature winner Mike Sullivan Jr.
Axle Wicker won the Hornet feature that featured ten cars this week, even after having to start from the tail of the grid by virtue of his win a week ago. Ryan Brooks, Bill Lawson, Allen Line, and Brandon Loomis rounded out the top five.
The SCORA Sprints made their inaugural visit to the speedway bringing twelve drivers along for their 20-lap feature event. In the end it was Springfield, IL native J.C. Bland earning the win after moving to the high side on the final lap.
The first two pairings of the Miller Lite Match races were also held during a brief intermission with Jason Hastings getting the best of Jamie Lomax 2-1, and Jim Farris knocking out A.J. Dixon 2-0. Hastings will now meet Dave Porth, while Farris is slated to take on Joe Adam in round two matchups.
