Coyne's Count Continues, Kelly Potter Plants Sprint Win, King Returns to Street Stocks, Wins!

Warrensburg, Missouri

The run for the 'gold' Saturday night in the second 'big one' of the year at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, coined as the Farm and Home of Warrensubrg/ T-Mobile 'Bar B Que Bowl', had about as many leaders in the 40 lap championship event as it had events to set the main event up.

After leading, a slip-up, falling back to eighth then charging forward again, Basehor, Ks' Tim 'ice cream' Karrick came out on top for his fourth feature win in his Price Chopper/ Blue Bunny 'Skyrocket' chassis machine at CMS in 5 weeks. This time it paid off handsomely with a $2,000 winner's pot. It was also Karrick's first-ever CMS' 'Big One' victory.

Points leader and a definite dominant driver in Country Kitchen's Limited Late Model division, Kevin 'kid' Coyne from Blue Springs, won for the fourth time in their 15 lap main event. It's still Potters or Chevaliers in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car's winner 'scircle, this time back to Raymore's Kelly Potter for his second seasonal victory.

Driving 'double duty' due to his brother having to go out of town for the holiday, now 'Mighty Modified' driver Bob King from Independence took over the reins as a Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock 'fill in', then proceeded to win the 15 circuit affair. King scored as a three time feature winner and won the CARB 'Rookie of the Year' title in the same racer last season.

Forty three of the attending 93 race cars that showed for the 'Big One' were from the Mighty Modified ranks. It took six qualifying heats and two last-chance 'B' features to find the top 24 for the 40 lap championship.

The 10-lap heat winners were Dean Wille, David Gemes, Tom Charles, Chad Lyle, Danny Scrogham and Karrick. Wins in the twin 'B's were put in by Alan Deatherage from Concordia in the first and Overland Park, Ks' C.J. Lyle in the second.

By earning the front-row-pole spot with the first heat win, Wille had a down the center groove lead at the start. Charles was in hot pursuit with Chad Lyle and 'Movin' Dave Meyer side by side right behind. Moving into the top group from the middle of the pack was Jason 'trouble' Thompson, previous winner and points leader at CMS, along with distant visitor Kelly 'Skyrocket' Shryock from Fertile, Iowa an d, of course, Karrick.

Charles put high pressure on by edging ahead of Wille from time to time, while Chad Lyle took an outside stance. Three grooves wide, the excellent track surface kept the track covered with cars from top to bottom.

As race-space got even rarer at the front, Lyle was caught in a slight skirmish that caused one of his suspension springs to pop out, sending him off turn three and out of the race.

Meanwhile, Shryock, finding as high a groove that was possible on the 'edge', started knocking off cars one by one till he led on lap 17. Cars behind jostled their positions with all the changes almost impossible to record. The other 'Skyrocket' chassis driver, Karrick, sort of followed Shryock's footsteps and was then challenging for the helm. Having to maneuver around behind runners, Shryock was forced to brake early and Karrick had to jump his brakes, almost sending him off the bank. Karrcik recovered, but was back in eighth, ….that quick!

While cars came up to and fro to the front, Charles was the only 'steady' postioner as he stayed in second most of the time. While others tried vainly to find a non-filled lane forward, standout Larry Stevenson found one and moved to third. But, two laps later he faded then pulled off with a broken front suspension.

The next that followed to the wayside was leader Shryock when his car starting running too hot and he pulled off on lap 24 and Thompson popped a tie rod and was sidelined. This helped, in sorts for Karrick, as he was running the 'edge' within inches all the way around. He found positions ahead until he reached the lead, and resultant win on lap 34.

Meanwhile, where was 'the rooster'? Still right there in the second spot which he held for $1,500 at Hershel Thompson's flying double checkers.

While most eyes were focused on the multi-front runners, two racers 'from the 'B', CMS ace pilots Deatherage and 'Chargin' Charlie Ebert, drew little attention as they zipped through heavy traffic. Chargin' Charlie got the 'top charger' award with third ($1.000) after starting way-way back in 21st and co-runner Deatherage, who took the green in 19th, copped fourth for $900. Meyer held steady at fifth and absorbed $800. Rounding out the top ten finishers with outstanding drives were Jamie Ragland ($700), Robert Kluender ($600), Wille ($500), Gemes ($400) and early front runner Tracy 'country boy' Wolf ($300).

Coyne's fourth LLM win was a bit of a cruise this weekend. He had also won the feature the night before in Sedalia on the fair's half mile dirt. He was followed across the line by fourth starting Marc 'the dweeb' Carter in second, third was Mark 'mountain man' Evinger, who's getting consistent at late, vet driver Buddy Blain and a flying Lance Elwell.

With King showing he still had the Street Stock 'right stuff' after a year-long layoff, he was followed by Herb Dannar, points leader and always front runner Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, Chad Eickleberry and a great run by Dan Colhour in fifth.

Kelly Potter's second seasonal win was chased across the line on the final lap by 'cuz' and three time winner Kenny Potter, rookie-excellante' Artie Lett, Joe Chevalier and 'dad' Danny Chevalier was all over his son's tail in fifth.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS:

Bad luck seems to be still haunting 6-time CMS Mighty Mod champ "Fast" Richard Layne and car owner Bobby Hunt. Their engine let go in the heat, and he was out for the night. It broke his three-consecutive 'big one' win streak. Brother Bobby Layne did well with a second in the heat, started 12th in the championship but had a right front tire peel off flat early in the go. Don't worry, they'll be baaaaa--aaaacck!

CMS 2002 Limited Late Model champ David Gemes from Warsaw, who this year is fielding a full-bore Late Model on the circuits, got a Modified ride for the special. He seemed a bit nervous about it before the races, smiled a lot afterward with a nice ninth place amongst the Mod pros. He drove the X-15 car normally driven by Raymore's Kevin Rogers.

It was also a disappointment for Concordia's Jason 'trouble' Thompson. Still the CMS Mod points leader, he scored a win the Saturday night before, scored a win Wednesday night with his machine at Sedalia's World of Outlaw show with NASCAR defending Winston Cup champ Tony Stewart driving, then won again the previous night at LA Raceway. His tie rod let loose half way through the grind. He was movin' up.

Was nice to have well-known racer Kelly Shryock coming down from Fertile, Ia to give the 'big one' a try. Shryock, whose late father Bob used to come south and run in this area for many years, is the manufacturer of the popular 'Skyrocket' chassis. His machine could have won if it weren't for the engine overheating, but when his didn't make it, Karrick's Skyrocket did.

No hot-laps for the Modifieds! That's right! Week after week, the order of things at CMS is always the same. In fact, you could say year after year. Why the mods were not in line at the right time, right after the Street Stocks, is still unknown. After waiting another 5 minutes, track owner and director Earl Walls had to cancel it. No time left. Whaddya wanna bet they all remember the rest of this season when to …….'be there'!

Was most pleasant that for the second year in a row that Pleasant Hill's Samantha Innes was the trophy presenter for the event's main sponsor, Farm and Home of Warrensburg. Also, F&M sponsored driver Dean Wille and many a host from F and H/T-Mobile toured the stands at intermission time to throw some super-quality hats and t-shirts to the crowd. Like their business, it was a classy!

This coming Saturday night will be the seventh running of the Miller Lite/ Lone Wolf/ Chevalier Homes WOFC "Sprint Car Rumble". And that ready to race sprint car will finally see a slip drawn to find out who the new owner is. You'll have a final chance to try and win by seeing the raffle ticket gals around until half of the intermisison is over. Good luck. You might be racing with us soon!
