Kerry Madsen steals O’Reilly Midwest All Star win at Spoon River Speedway
Camargo, IL (7-24-09) – By Kelly Brown –Public Relations Director – At the beginning of the night when Kerry Madsen pulled into the pits at Spoon River Speedway, it was the first time he had attempted to run an O’Reilly Midwest All Star race. At the end of the night his first race quickly transitioned into his first win as the Australian known as “The Madman” won an exciting event at Spoon River Speedway.
Starting on the front row of the main event was Jim Moughan on the pole and Ryan Bunton on the outside. On the drop of the Green Flag Jim quickly sprinted into the lead with the rest of the field in his tire tracks. It was not long before fourth place starter Joey Moughan would assume the second position and the battle was on.
Throughout the first half of the race, the show was up front between the dueling Moughans. Jim had the lead, but Joey was on his tail. There were several times in which the two raced side-by-side for the lead. It was like the Jim and Joey show as the two traded the lead back and fourth, fighting tooth and nail for that top spot. The first caution of the night was flown for an incident between the two. While trying to take the lead Jim got high and brushed the wall, but was able to compose himself and carry on, but not before the flagman prematurely threw the Yellow Flag anticipating that Jim would not be able to continue on from the brush. When the yellow came out though, Jim was still running in second and the flag caused the race to revert to the lap before, so by brushing the wall Jim got the top spot back.
When the race resumed the two started where they left off. The next two caution flags of the night would fly for a pair of spins by Patrick Haynes who had suspension issues on his 5h sprint car. After the second spin Haynes would retire from the event.
When the racing action resumed Kerry Madsen was on the tail of the Moughans, so when he saw the Green Flag looming, he dove under the two to assume the lead. The last Yellow Flag of the night would come out with just a few laps remaining as the 84 of Ben Wagoner and 96 of Nick Sharron tangled on the track. This would end Wagoner’s night, but Sharron was able to continue on.
With laps counting down Jim and Joey continued their battle as Madsen stretched out a sizable lead. With just a few laps remaining, Jerrod Hull who had came from the twelfth starting spot to slide his way into the second position before the end of the race. At the Finish Line it would be Madsen picking up his first O’Reilly Midwest All Star win; with Jerrod Hull, Jim Moughan, Joey Moughan and Mathew Reed rounding out the top-five.
This was also Madsen’s first win at Spoon River Speedway. The top charger of the night was Terry Babb in his 21x car. He would have to race his way through the B-main to get into the feature, and then start nineteenth. At the end of the event Babb was one spot from breaking into the top-5, picking up thirteen spots during the 30-lap event.
The O’Reilly Midwest All Stars will be back in action on the weekend of August 7th as the series will host a triple-header with two nights at I-55 Speedway in Cameron, Missouri, before finishing out the weekend on August 9th at Quincy Speedway in Quincy, Illinois.
