LOCUST GROVE AR. Mike Marler topped the second round of qualifying at the 8th Annual TCI Automotive Mid-America Modified Championship. Marler used the race's only caution to his advantage in a super slick afternoon matinee 25 lap qualifying feature event.
Johnny Bone Jr. held the pole to start the event, but outside front row holder, Claudie Cook dashed off to the lead, and built a bigger and bigger advantage over the early laps. Robby Arnold, Marler, Bone, and Eddie Martin dropped in behind Cook.
The field rode in order until lap nine, when Jerry Waugh slowed on the backstretch, and pulled up in turn three bringing out the caution.
Marler pulled even with Robby Arnold just after the green flag came out signalling the restart. Marler took the lead in turn four on lap 10, then passed Cook for the lead one lap later in the same spot.
Marler's advantage was five carlenghts immeadiatly, and headed the field by 15 carlengths by lap 15. He was a full half straight ahead by lap 20, and went to the checkered flag unchallenged. Robby Arnold put a move on Claudie Cook for the second spot coming out of turn four heading to the checkred flag, securing a second row starting spot in the 24 car, 3-wide feature event.
Mike Marler, Robby Arnold, Claudie Cook, Johnny Bone Jr., and Eddie Martin made up the top five. Scott Duvall, Justin Boney, and Wendell Wallace secured the final transfer spots.
