Farmington, MO – (September 11) -- Racing continued Saturday at St Francois County Raceway with action and drama abound. On this night, the last $5.00 Grandstand night, the crowd was good. Members of Show Me Rent to Own were in the house helping sponsor the event and giving prizes away. Also after the races Grassy Holler Band performed for the crowd that decided to stay. During intermission drivers Matt DeNoyer, Mark Dickerson, and Patrick DeNoyer help orchestrate a tribute to the fallen firefighters, rescue workers and civilians taken away on 9/11. This marked the ninth anniversary of the attack. Drivers of the B-Modified Division made laps around the track with flags on their cars, which the driver autographed and given away to the crowd. Wolf Creek Fire Department participated along with one of the rescue trucks from ground zero on 9/11.
As mentioned before, Joey Montgomery, made his way to the Winners Circle again for the second time in two weeks and his fifth of the season. The masterful driving of the cushion and handling of traffic left little to doubt for the win. Keith Burch and Joey Boyd started on the front row and ran it deep into one followed by Montgomery and Steve Short. A spin by Tierney Cooper brought out the yellow flag on Lap five. Cooper was able to continue. Montgomery took charge and his brother Tim began his assault on the front runners as he worked his way to a runner-up finish. Pole setter Keith Burch held his own for a third place finish. Another nice run by Sprint Rookie Kasey Burch as he brought his car home for a season best fourth place. Outside front row starter Joey Boyd completed the top five.
Drama is key in the A-Modified Division as the track championship is up for grabs. Going into the night Billy Smith held a slim 18 point lead over Brent Thompson. At the end of the evening these two are very close. The possibility also has Thompson assuming the point lead with one week to go for the Championship. Official points will be posted on the track website, www.sfcr-online.com, as soon as they are available. However, Thompson did not have an easy road to the win. Jeremy Greenwalt started on the pole position alongside Matt Eaton. Greenwalt came out with the lead followed by Tommy Worley, Sr, Eaton, Thompson and Billy Smith. Lap three saw the first caution for a spin by Matt Dickerman. The restart saw the caution wave again for Kasey Nations. He drove it deep into three, got it to far sideways and stalled the motor. Greenwalt had pulled his car to one of the officials for a safety check. On lap five another caution came out for the stalled car of Adam Parmeley. Greenwalt again pulled to the idside for a safety check. This time he took his car to the pit area with leaking fluid and was done for the night. Last weeks winner Tommy Worley, Sr inherits the lead and looking for back to back wins. Two laps later the motor in Smith’s car would expire and force him to the pits and out. Thompson got around Worley and won in going away. Starting in the thirteenth position, Kent Nation quietly made his way through for a runner-up finish. Tommy Worley, Sr had another fine drive for a third place finish. Another drive starting deep in the field, Bill Nickelson, claims fourth place after starting fourteenth on the grid. Completing the top five with another good run is Billy Joe Beard.
The B-Modified Division did a wonderful job of presenting solidarity for the 9/11 victims and rescue workers, however the racing left something to be desired. Multiple cautions appeared during the event that was more like and endurance run than a “sprint.” Brian Richards, Pacific, MO, said he was glad the race was over. He survived to get his second win of the season. He also won on May 8th. Eddie Gross had the fast car early on as he led almost the entire distance, but a slight mistake opened up the door for Richards and dropped him back to second where he would finish. Championship contender Kenny Harris ran toward the front and claimed third place honors and has all but locked up the Championship. Fourth place goes to a smoking John Bohn. Earlier in the night his car did catch fire, but no issues to stop him from running. For the second time this season Joshua Hauf makes it into the top five.
Pure Street Division winner Jimmy Farris found a hole big enough to drive the City of Farmington through. Took that opening and made it all the way to the Winners Circle for the third straight time. Last week Farris told the crowd his was tuning up for the return of 2009 Champion Brian Blair. Brian has raced a limited schedule this season. The match never got off the ground as Blair did not start the A-Main. At the outset, Past Champion and soon to be current Champion, Chris Boyd drove off into one with the lead followed by Charlie Savage, Eric Sarakas and Robbie Williams. Savage was having trouble with the handling of the car as the front end wanted to skip to the outside. When that happened is when Farris found the opening and came from third to the lead. Chris Boyd got shuffled around in traffic and had to drive his way back into the top five. Farris wins for the third time. Robbie Williams, who has done a good job lately, makes it to the runner up spot and his best run of the season. Eric Sarakas finishes third and looks headed for as good a good finish in the Championship chase. Boyd continued his drive and ended up in the fourth and Dusty Homan completes the top five with his run.
Championship week is next weekend and all divisions will determined.
