Farmington, MO (July 24) -- Joey Montgomery, Fredericktown, MO wore the “hat” Saturday Night at St Francois County Raceway by winning his heat, the dash and the main event. With member of the Declue Funeral Home on board for their night at the races, Montgomery claims another win in his familiar #21c machine. Starting his quest from the pole position, Montgomery had to first deal with outside runner Jimmy Hurley, Springfield, IL. Hurley is on a current streak of his own as he has won the last two feature events. These two along with Joey Boyd, Farmington, MO and Jerrod Hull, Sikeston, MO jumped out quickly with Montgomery the leader. John Epperson dropped out of the event early with mechanical issues. On Lap 11, Tommy Worley and Jimmy Bridgeman made contact going into turn one. Bridgemans car did the bounce and stop on the top groove. A J Bruns and Keith Burch had nowhere to go and were collected in the accident. Bruns and Bridgeman would be out of the event. This set a restart that found Boyd, Montgomery and Hurley all exchanging the lead on each lap. On more than one occasion this trio ran three wide. Several times they would approach traffic and managed to find the path to get through. Lap 22 saw the red flag waved as Jerrod Hull smacked the outside wall coming out of turn two, bounce back into the race groove and stop. Hull would exit his car as the ambulance was dispatched to the site. Hull walked to the ambulance with help of safety crew. No reports on his condition. The ambulance did not leave the grounds and racing continued. Montgomery held on for the win, Hurley takes runner-up honors, followed by Tim Montgomery, Fredericktown, MO in third. After a great run and leading a few laps, Joey Boyd finishes fourth with Tommy Worley completing the top five.

Modified action found 2009 Track Champion, David Shepard, DeSoto, MO in the winner circle after the dust had cleared. Brent Thompson, Billy Smith and Shepard served notice they are the ones to beat. Thompson, the point leader coming into the night, raced into turn one with Shepard and Smith. He would lead the first four circuits. Shepard would take the lead on Lap 5 and survive several cautions on his way for the win. Although he got the win Shepard was not a very happy camper in his post race interview as he commented on some of the driving styles of his competitors. Smith would hang in there for second followed by Jeremy Greenwalt, Kasey Nations and Kent Nations for top five honors.

Action in the B Modified Division heated up as well. Running for $600 to win, “The Hustler” Kenny Harris out hustled the field for his 114th career win. It was not an easy road to victory for Harris. He started inside of row two on what at seemed to be a one groove track. Greg Price was the pole sitter and Shannon Burch also on the front row. Price, Harris, Burch, Jack Halbert and Randy Forster would race for the lead early. Two laps in caution flew for Ken Huber as he spun his car, we then ran four laps and Huber again spun. Two tries later we got back to green with Price continuing to set the pace. He would the fall by the wayside with a caution of his own. This gave Harris the lead. He survived another caution before taking the checkered flag for the win. Second place went to Shannon Burch with Brian Richards in third. Mike Savage and Randy Forster complete the top five in the class.

2009 Champion, Brian Blair made the tour to the top of the Pure Street Division on Saturday. In claiming his first win of the season, he had no trouble with the field. Blair, current point leader and past Champion Chris Boyd, Jimmy Farris came out quickly. Last weeks winner Paul Belken and runner up from last week Charlie Savage were in pursuit of the leaders. Not much change in the running order for this race. Blair had the car set good as if on a set of rails. He did not over work the car. More like a Sunday drive in the park for the win. Boyd stayed in the runner-up slot followed by Belken, Savage and Farris.

Racing will be out for the next couple of weeks. Saturday, July 31, the St. Francois County Fair will be in operation. Saturday, August 7, we will be shut down for the World of Outlaw Sprints at I-55 Raceway. After a couple weeks, we return to the clay surface on August 14. This will be another of our $5.00 Main Grandstand Admission nights. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free with a paid adult. Pit Passes are available as well for standard pricing. When we return, the regular classes will be on hand, 410 Winged Sprints, both A & B Modifieds and Pure Street. As a added attraction the Gateway Vintage Racing Association will be here. Gates at 4:00, hot laps around 6:00 and the first race scheduled for 7:00.
