Center Line, Mich. — Paul McMahan is no stranger to the demands and pressures that professional winged-sprint car racing can present. The seasoned veteran knows that at this weekend’s National Sprint Tour Series event at the Thunderbowl Raceway, all eyes will be on him. McMahan is up for the challenge and looks to set the tone for the season.

“We plan to come out full force this weekend and we’re looking for the win,” McMahan said. “We’re a bit behind; we’ve had to hustle to get one car ready and we have a spare, but we’re not looking to present any excuses. The goal for this year is to win as many races as we can. The points fall into place if you can win races. Consistency is the key to the championship, and we’re looking start our momentum in Tulare.”

While the No. 20 Tony Stewart Motorsports team is new for McMahan, the core elements of the team are unchanged. Veteran crew chief Jimmy Carr will continue to lead the team, with the support of seasoned crew members Todd Splain and Mike Kuemper. The challenges that a new series, new season and new faces in the mix present aren’t likely to slow the No. 20 team down. McMahan and company have no intentions of rewriting their book of tricks.

“We’re not going to do anything differently than we have in the past,” McMahan said. “Jimmy, the crew, and I are going to work to learn how to adapt to each other, but from a driver’s standpoint, I look to do what I’ve always done: Go out and try to win races. I think that we’ll be competitive and that people will see that we’re here to stay.”

The 2006 National Sprint Tour Series will kick off this weekend at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., on February 24–25. The two-day event will mark the first event for the series in its inaugural season.
