EL PASO, Texas (March 31) – A company already familiar to IMCA competitors is back on board as a contingency award spon¬sor this season.

MSD Ignition, marking its 40th year in business in 2010, will give product awards based on final point standings for each of the five IMCA Modified regions and both IMCA Sunoco Stock Car regions.

The program is similar to the one MSD had with IMCA from 2002 to 2007.

“We had been more involved with grassroots racing and we’re excited to get back more to that level this year,” said MSD Marketing Director Todd Ryden. “It’s always been an important part of our business and drivers in these two divi¬sions have been our customers for a long time.”

“We want to do more for this level of racing,” he added, noting the new tech support trailer destined for events in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. “There’s no better place to do market research and support our customers than in the pits.”

Champions and runnersup in each Modified region earn MSD-made ignition control boxes; third and fourth place drivers get spark plug wire sets and the fifth place driver receives a coil.

Top drivers in the Stock Car regions get HEI kits. Runnersup get a digital HEI module and the third place finishers receive spark plug wire sets.

Drivers in both divisions must compete with MSD Ignition products, display two MSD decals on their race car and return a sign-up form to the IMCA office by Aug. 1.

Awards will be shipped directly from the El Paso, Texas, manufacturer and distributor after point standings become official in October.

“IMCA has always been a good promoter of our products. We want to become more involved with grassroots racing and they’re one of the sanctioning bodies we wanted to get re-established with,” said Mike Sharp, MSD’s director of automotive motorsports. “IMCA drivers are really some of our best supporters and the people who buy a lot of our prod¬ucts. We want to return something to them.”

"The program with MSD didn't materialize over the past two years but our relationship with them remained strong during that period,” said IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder. “Our organizations have continued to keep communication open with the goal being the ultimate renewal of our partnership. We are pleased to be able to award MSD products at the end of the year once again and our racers are really the ones who will benefit."
