Mt.Vernon IL - April, opening month of the Mt.Vernon Raceway season will be one packed full of racing.
Saturday April 2nd will be a test and tune session. Racers from a four-state area will be getting the feel of the reworked Mt.Vernon Raceway ¼ mile banked oval. In attendance will be Sprint cars, UMP Super Late Models, Steelblock Late Models, UMP Modifieds, 600 Micro Sprints, Hobby Stocks, 4 cyl Hornets and the fastest growing class of cars in the Midwest, The Fastrack Latemodels.$10.00 to race or watch.
Opening night of the Mt.Vernon Raceway Regular Racing season will be Saturday April 9th, Steelblock Latemodels, UMP Modifieds, Hobbystocks and the 4 cyl Hornets, will begin the 2005 point’s battle. 2004 points champions, Steel Block Late Model Champion Chuck Still, UMP Modified Champion Matt Mevert, Hobby Stock Champion Bobby Wilkins and Hornet Champion Daniel Heck will return to defend their titles.
The UMP Challenge of Champions touring series makes an early visit to the Southern Illinois facility on Saturday April 16th. Dennis Erb, 2004 UMP National Champ and Mt.Vernon Raceways Super Latemodel Champion Rodney Melvin, Highland IL’s Randy Korte, DuQuoins "Fast" Frankie Martin, Former UMP Champion from Breese IL, Mark Faust, and a host of other regional UMP Super Late Model drivers and local Steel Block Racers are expected to participate. UMP Modifieds, Hobby stocks and Hornets will round out the bill.
The Mt.Vernon Raceway Weekly Series returns Sat. April 23rd.
The NALMS (Northern Allstars Late Models Series) makes a Friday night appearance April 22nd. This will be the first night of a three-night swing for the All Stars. Current NALMS points leader, Dale McDowell, along with Steve Barnett, Billy Moyer, Mike Hammerle, Rodney Melvin, all who are currently active in the 2005 points chase and are expected to participate. UMP Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Hornets will round out the card.
There will be NO racing Saturday April 23rd.
The balance of the summer schedule includes in May, a visit by NASCAR regular Ken Schrader, also an appearance by the Fastrack racing Series. June has the UMP Summer Nationals; also Mt.Vernon Raceway is proud to be hosting The Hoosier Tire Midwest Hornet Nationals in September.
