KASSON, Minn. (May 30) – The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour finally beat Mother Nature this Memorial Day Weekend, completing the fifth straight night of action Sunday with the 9th Annual Stars & Stripes Shootout at the Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn.

A few sprinkles early in the evening threatened to shorten the program, but the clouds held off just long enough for the fans to witness Tommy Myer beat the best of the best in dirt Modified racing and capture his first win of the season.

Ten minutes after completion of the 40-lap main event just shortly before 10 p.m., the rain began to fall. The packed grandstand quickly emptied as fans scurried to stay dry in their vehicles, but Myer was in no hurry as he savored his 37th career USMTS victory at the racetrack where he cut his teeth in racing.

“I’ve always enjoyed racing in Kasson and I hope the fans will keep supporting the track each week,” Myer said in victory lane. “We’ve got a lot of young talent racing in this area and we need this track.”
After a dominating heat race performance, Myer redrew the pole position for the WIX Filters “A” Main. The 44-year-old from nearby Blooming Prairie, Minn., beat current track and USRA national points leader Josh Angst to the first turn at the drop of the green flag and quickly left the field in his wake.

Four cautions throughout the feature allowed past USMTS National Champions Kelly Shryock, Tim Donlinger and Jason Krohn each a shot at the leader, but each time the green flag unfurled again, Myer shot out to a huge lead.

After the final yellow flag on lap 27, Myer disappeared from the pack over the final 13 laps to cross the finish line with an advantage of more than five seconds.

“I thought they were a lot closer,” Myer revealed after the race. “Every time we had a caution, I could see Krohn or somebody else on the inside of me. I just tried to block it out and concentrate on running my line.”

Myer’s line carried him to a $2,000 payday and his third career USMTS win at the Dodge County Speedway.

Shryock nipped Krohn for the runner-up spot while Rodney Sanders slipped past Donlinger with two laps to go to take fourth at the checkered flag.

Zack VanderBeek, Al Hejna, Angst, Steve Wetzstein and Ryan Gustin rounded out the top ten finishers.

In the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region points standings, Shryock holds the lead with a slim two-point advantage (294-292) over Donlinger while Myer sits third with 271 points. VanderBeek is fourth with 242 markers, followed by Krohn (240), Gustin (239), Mike Sorensen (233), Bumper Jones (232), Wetzstein (216) and Sanders (212).

Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., padded his lead in the DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year rankings with 627 points and has nearly double that of second-place Brandon Davis (315). Nick Deal is third with 254 points, Rick Beebe is fourth with 248 and Matt Dotson is fifth with 209.

Thanks to Myer’s triumph, two-time defending COMP Cams Engine Builder of the Year Award winner Sput’s Racing Engines overtook Mullins Race Engines in the current battle between the power-makers while Hughes Racing Chassis continues atop the Chassis Builders Championship ahead of Skyrocket Chassis.

The USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour returns to the Falcon Wind Power Mo-Kan Region for a doubleheader next weekend. The touring titans trek to the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan., on Friday, June 4, then crosses the border for a date at the Springfield Raceway in Springfield, Mo., on Saturday, June 5.
