CARTERSVILLE, GA – Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS picked up NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series wins during Week 23 competition, while Mother Nature rained out four events. The East Region title is all but clinched for Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL, and the West Region title is up for grabs among five drivers.

Nowell drove the Clarence’s Truck Repair GRT to his second NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region win of the season on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL. Lee was a West Region winner for the sixth time this season on Friday night at Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS driving the Billy Riels Racing GRT.

Knowles finished second to Nowell at East Alabama Motor Speedway on Saturday night, and picked up his final ten bonus points on Sunday night at the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS. That brought Knowles’ best 16 finish point total to 816, three short of his clinching magic number of 819.

Knowles only needs to net three more points to clinch the title. Knowles’ four lowest point events in his current best 16 point total are three 46s, and a 48. A 50-point win gives Knowles the championship. The only driver that has a mathematical chance to defeat Knowles for the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Championship is Larry Harrod of Plains, GA.

Harrod also had a busy weekend, as he picked up ten bonus points on Friday night at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National event at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS, and finished third on Saturday night at EAMS to stay alive in the East Region title run.

Harrod can still total 818 points by the end of the season on October 3 if he can run the table with 50-point wins in events with a car count of 15 or more in the four remaining races available in the East Region, and pick up ten more bonus points at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National event at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL on October 3.

The remaining East Region schedule shows a possible four events available to drivers based on the East Region tracks’ web sites. Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC rained out on Saturday night, and has rescheduled the event for this Thursday night.

This will be a key event in deciding the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Championship. Harrod has to pick up 50-point wins this Thursday night, and then each Saturday night for the next three weeks, plus get the TST bonus points. Harrod’s four lowest point events in his best 16 total are a 42 and three 46s.

Saturday night shows East Region events scheduled for East Alabama Motor Speedway, Tri-County Race Track, and Mountain Raceway Park in Maryville, TN. Tri-County Race Track and Mountain Raceway Park also have races scheduled for September 19 and September 26.

The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Adam Martin of Talladega, AL was eliminated from East Region title contention over the weekend, as Martin left 30 bonus points on the table, and his home track, Talladega Short Track, rained out on Saturday night, and did not reschedule the event.

The top five drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region point standings are still alive for the 2009 championship.

The remaining West Region schedule shows a possible seven events available to drivers based on the West Region tracks’ web sites. That includes the double points race that was rained out on Saturday night at South Mississippi Speedway in Gulfport, MS that has been rescheduled for September 26.

Hattiesburg Motorsports Park will be in action this Friday night, and Saturday night events are scheduled for Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS, and Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS.

The next weekend has Hattiesburg Motorsports Park scheduled for September 18, and September 19 events are scheduled for Jackson Motor Speedway, South Mississippi Speedway, Whynot Motorsports Park, and Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS.

September 26 shows Jackson Motor Speedway, and Pike County Speedway in action along with the South Mississippi Speedway double-points event. October 3 has Whynot Motorsports Park and South Mississippi Speedway in action.

Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS leads the West Region standings with 806 points. Keeton’s seven lowest point events in his best 16 point total are a 42, two 44s, a 46, and three 48s. Keeton can earn up to 836 points.

Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS is second in the West Region standings with 788 points, and his seven lowest point events in his best 16 point total are three 44s, and four 46s. Arnold can earn up to 822 points. Lee is third in the West Region standings with 772 points, and his seven lowest point events in his best 16 point total are six 44s, and a 46. Lee can earn up to 812 points.

Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS is fourth in the West Region standings with 763 points. Cooley will only be able to net points in six possible events, as he is the point leader in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Tour, and will be at Talladega Short Track for the October 3 National event. Cooley’s six lowest point events in his best 16 point total are a 39, a 40, three 42s, and a 44. Cooley can earn a possible 814 points.

Kody Barber of Bogalusa, LA is fifth in the West Region standings with 736 points. Barber can still earn ten bonus points with a trip to Talladega Short Track on October 3, and then net points in six West Region events. Barber’s six lowest point events in his best 16 point total are a 34, two 38s, two 40s, and a 42. Barber can earn a possible 814 points.

Nowell and Lee gave the defending and three-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufactures Challenge Champion GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR two wins in Week 23 competition to bring them within five points of current point leader Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL. Trak-Star has 45 wins, and GRT has 40 wins.

Mastersbilt Race Cars of Crothersville, IN is third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufactures Challenge with 23 wins, Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN is fourth with 17 wins, TNT Race Cars of Piney Flats, TN is fifth with eight wins, and C.J.
