Night one of the Seventh Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl got underway Friday night with three divisions of cars on hand for competition in the ULMA Late Models, OMMS Midgets, and Street Stocks. Late model drivers and their crews have one more night in their Triple Crown Shootout event, which wraps up Saturday evening with a $1,500-to-Win thirty-lap main event. The Ozark Mountain Midgets made their second and final appearance of the year and the Street Stocks began night one of their mini point series championship, which concludes Sunday evening.

Eighteen ULMA Late Models were on hand for night one of their annual track special event. With an increased purse on the line as well as $400 bonus money from an anonymous donor to the cars who showed up for night one racing, drivers put it all on the line as the night came to a close. ULMA member drivers also were competing for bragging rights for the Triple Crown Shootout as well as added contingencies and money. The drivers on hand strapped into their full-bodied machines and competed in qualifying heat races and a scramble event to sort out the inside row starters for Saturday night’s big-money race. Bob King, Dave Meyer, Brett Wood, and Shawn Rayfield were the first four cars to cross the line in the first heat race. Jason Bodenhamer grabbed the win in heat two ahead of Kevin Coyne, Steve Clancy, and Jon Binning. The third and final heat race to setup the starting line-up for the night one scramble went to Bob Test, the overall ULMA point leader; Danny Monroe was second, followed by Brian Pipes and Bryan Montgomery to the top four. In the scramble event, Bodenhamer got off to an early race lead over the rest of the field with Dave Meyer in hot pursuit. The two veteran drivers waged a fierce battle up front during the initial laps and ran door panel to door pane for several laps until Bodenhamer edged out to the lead. Bob King and Bob Test never let the two leaders too far out of their sites as the laps wound down. Steve Clancy and Brett Wood ran strong to gain positions early on but misfortune fell upon Wood midway through the race as he had to restart from the tail end of the field. Late into the event, Bob Test found his groove around the high side of the speedway and made a lap eighteen pass on Bodenhamer, who slipped to second. In the end, Test was too strong for the rest of the field and went on to gain the pole position for Saturday night’s big race. Following Test to the line at the checkers was Bodenhamer, Meyer, King, Jon Binning and Clancy inside the top six. The top twelve finishers are locked in for Saturday night’s main event.

Open wheel fans enjoyed the OMMS midgets for the second time this season as 20 drivers made their way to CMS to race on the high-banked track for three qualifying heat races. When the OMMS midgets last visited CMS the main-event winner was Rusty Dukes of Fair Grove, Missouri who took the win and he made it known from the start that he was the man to beat again on this night as he claimed the first heat race over Steven Weber of Wayne City, Illinois and Bob Gailbraith of Washington, Missouri, and Phil Heavelow of Buckner, Missouri. Heat race two finished this way with Gavin Gailbraith of Washington, Missouri first, Richard Kriesel of Warsaw, Missouri second, Dave Parker also of Warsaw third, and Niel Gamble of Hurley, Missouri fourth. The final heat race went to Will Pierce of Lee’s Summitt, Missouri taking the win over Austin Archdale of Brimfield, Illinois in second, Jim Reid of Clinton, Missouri third and Dustin Arnall of Hartville, Missouri fourth. For the midget a-main Will Pierce set sail never to be seriously challenged for the win although there were several close battles behind him for second. Gavin Gailbraith did all he could to keep Pierce in check but could never mount a serious challenge in the blistering-paced feature event. Phil Heavelow appeared to be destined for a top three finish but misfortune struck the two-time champion as he spun off late in the race and was unable to finish the event. Pierce held on for a stellar victory in front of several family members and friends who welcomed him into victory lane. Gavin Gailbraith finished second, one rung ahead of Austin Archdale in third. Richard Kriesel came away fourth with Steven Weber fifth, and Matt Fox sixth.

The Street Stocks kicked off their weekend in pursuit of added purse money with 13 cars signed into the pit area. Friday night served as night one in the special mini points series championship, which will conclude Sunday evening. Extra money was put up by promoters Earl and Susan Walls for the mini series with the top three overall special point earners going away with extra cash. Street Stock competitors also had extra money placed into the purse by driver Marc Carter racing and his sponsors with an extra $100 on the line for Sunday night's winner as well as an extra $50 each for the mini series first- and second-place finishers. Heat races were contested to kick off the evening's program with Chad Eickleberry taking heat one ahead of Marc Carter, Michael Mullins, and Bobby Ruff. Heat two went to defending track champion Brian Johnson over Jerry Schmidt, Larry Ferris, and Anthony Witham. In the main event, Eickleberry paced the field from the onset, mastering the CMS high banks in convincing form in the strongest run for the #09 team so far this year. Two-time champion Brian Johnson did all he could to find a way around the leader throughout the race but as the laps wore down he found himself defending his second position from several drivers making their way to the front. Carter ran strong early on but mechanical issues derailed his bid for the win early in the event. After every caution period, Eickleberry was able to maintain his lead even as Jerry Schmidt and Johnson ran strong inside the top three. For a while it looked as though Schmidt might have something for leader Eickleberry but after each restart Eickleberry was able to put the power to the track and motor away for the victory. Johnson came home second with Bobby Ruff making a strong run to third from his seventh-starting position. Michael Mullins advanced from sixth to fourth by race end with Schmidt soldiering home to fifth, followed by John Miller with a fine run inside the top six. Street Stocks will return to CMS action to complete their mini point series along with A-Mods and B-Mods on Sunday evening.

Join us again Saturday night, July 3rd for night two of the special-event weekend as the Modifieds begin their qualifying races with the B-Modifieds beginning night one of their mini series championship. The ULMA Late Models will finish up their weekend with another full program and the $1,500-to-win race as well as the crowning of the Triple Crown Shootout winner.

ULMA drivers will also be on hand as part of the Homes for Our Troops collection; Homes for Our Troops benefits returning war veterans who have been injured in the line of duty. The Homes for Our Troops Late Model and Modified will be on display throughout the weekend and offers a great opportunity for fans to see these high-powered machines up close and personal. Saturday adult general admission is $15 with $3 off for senior citizens 65 years and up, military w/I.D., college students with school I.D., and young adults age 13 to 17 years. Children 6 to 12 years are $10 and kids 5 and under are free; pit passes for Saturday are $30.
