YREKA, Calif. (March 25) – Fourteen Saturday dates for IMCA Modifieds are on the schedule at Siskiyou Motor Speedway, the newest addition to IMCA’s ButlerBuilt Western Region.
Opening night is April 10. A pair of $1,000 to win events are in the works, with the final night for IMCA points in September.
“I think IMCA is the proper way for us to go,” said Billy Jasmer, president of the 11-member Siskiyou County Motorsports Association board that promotes the 3/8-mile clay oval. “We didn’t get any backing from our previous sanctioning body and they went overboard dollars and cents wise.”
“I really like IMCA’s engine rules,” added the former Yreka sportsman track champion. “Keeping the aluminum cylinder heads and roller cams out of the equation makes it possible for a lot more guys to afford to race.”
IMCA Modifieds had also run at the former Northern California Speedway from 1992-1995 and at re-named Yreka Speedway from 1996-1998.
Siskiyou is located half an hour’s travel time from the Oregon border and Jasmer expects the track to draw competitors from a radius of more than 100 miles.
“The new sanction at American Valley Speedway in Quincy, 2-1/2 hours to the southeast, is a very positive thing. Their drivers can race here on their off nights and our drivers can race there on our off nights,” he said. “We’ve been getting a lot of phone calls about the new sanction for the past month. In the next couple years I see more tracks in the area coming on board.”
Yreka goes on hiatus for the county fair in August. Operated solely by volunteers since 2001, the track hosts the John Arnberg Memorial on May 29 and the Rod Restad Memorial on July 24. Both specials are 50-lap events and pay $1,000 to win, making them qualifiers for Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballots.
Arnberg won the Modified track title at Yreka in 1993. Restad was SCMA board president prior to his death in 2001.
