The UMP Summer Nationals for Super Late Models highlighted a terrific night of racing which opened up the Ultimate Dirt Track Double Header Thursday at PIR. Part two of the double header is Friday with open wheel action aplenty…the Midwest Sprint Cars, the POWRi Midgets and Mini Sprints, Modifieds, and Crate Late Models will all take to the 3/8 mile dirt track.

UMP Summer Nationals for Super Late Models
Kevin Claycomb of Vincennes, IN repeated his opening night victory, lapping all but the top seven cars, in the 40-lap Late Model Summer Nationals main event. Dennis Erb of Carpentersville, IL finished second, a half lap behind the winner. Duke Whiseant of Texarkana, AR was third. Heat races were won by Claycomb, Erb, Randy Korte, and Darren Miller. Randy Sellars was the C feature winner and Jeep VanWormer won the B feature. Fairbury, IL’s Wes Stedinger out-qualified 34 competitors, circling the track in 15.553 seconds.

UMP Modifieds
Randle Sweeney of Clifty nipped Bradford, TN’s Bart Richardson in a thrilling 20-lap feature finish. Paducah’s Todd Miller finished third. Sweeney and Miller were heat winners.

UMP Street Stocks
Taking the lead from Poncho Elder, Steve Maisel of House Springs, MO took the 12-lap feature win. Paducah’s Elder finished second and Paul Howard of Calvert City was third. Maisel and Elder won their heats.

4 cylinder Warriors
Calvert City’s Jeffrey Bailey won another ten-lap feature, besting Keaton Downing of Gilbertsville and Jaren Frick from Boaz. Bailey and Cameron Stewart won heats.

The Sprint Cars and Midgets coming to PIR Friday are nationally famous for their non-use of wings, which produces close side-by-side competition.

The Midwest Sprint Car Series boasts large fields of cars. This will be the first appearance of full-size Midgets under the PIR’s current ownership. And the POWRi Mini Sprints are the same machines that compete in the Super Cell Mini Sprint division at PIR on a bi-weekly basis.

In addition to the three visiting open-wheel divisions, Friday’s program will include local Crate Late Models (racing for $500 to win) and Modifieds (racing for $600 to win) with their second appearance in two nights.

Pit gates will open at 4 PM Friday, the grandstand ticket office and gate open at 5, racing starts at 7:30. Adult grandstand admission is $20, children 12 and under are $5. Pit passes are $30 (minor releases required).

NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Ken Schrader, and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart joined the trio of co-owners as a partner in September of 2006. In 2008 the 3/8th mile high-banked oval will host several high profile events including three NASCAR Nights of Stars, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, the USA World 50, and the Tri-Track Challenge. PIR races every Friday night and is located off Interstate 24 at exit 11 in Paducah, Kentucky. For more information call the PIR hotline at (270) 448-4PIR or the track at (270) 898-SHOW (7469).
