This Saturday night at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway is Pepsi Night at the Races featuring a free driver autograph session during the intermission-time break. Drivers will be asked to come to either the front or backside grandstands to meet and greet their fans. Free autograph books will be available upon request at either side of the speedway at the admission gates for kids 12 and under. Fans are encouraged to bring items they wish their favorite drivers to sign such as track programs, pictures, and t-shirts. Drivers are encouraged to bring Sharpie permanent markers to sign items for the dedicated fans who want to meet them and to bring hero cards if they have them to give out to the race fans.
After coming off his sixth main event win of the year, one driver who is not scheduled to race this weekend is the Deuces Wild, Dustin Boney. He declared in victory lane last weekend that he would be spending some quality time with his family this coming weekend before returning to the speedway to shoot for his seventh main event of the year. Although Boney is not points chasing at CMS, due to his win percentage he currently sits in fifth position overall. Joe Walker, who was the 2007 Modified Champion, has an eight-point lead on Jason Thompson, who is the only other modified driver to claim a feature-race victory this season. Tim Karrick has used consistent top-ten finishes to put himself in the hunt in third position followed by James McMillin in fourth. Who will be the next modified to visit victory lane, many eyes are on Shad Badder and Jim Moody after their strong runs last weekend; however, at CMS one of the best things about the track is the mystique of who will and will not show up and put it all on the line for the weekly first place payout of $1,000.
Jason Bodenhamer is the current point leader in the ULMA Late Model division and has now claimed four main events on the year including last weekend’s 20-lap feature event. Two-time and defending track champion, Jon Binning, of Warrensburg is still in the hunt in second place followed by Lane Ehlert of Foristell, Missouri who resides in third. Dave Meyer’s return to late models this year has seen strong runs and did not finishes but you can rest assured Meyer is hungry for a win and to move up from his current fourth position in the points. Brian Pipes has been quietly racking up strong finishes and now he sits in the fifth position heading into Saturday night’s action. Both Binning and overall ULMA point leader Bob Test are hungry to return to victory lane this weekend, will they have what it takes to visit Waterloo Storage Products victory lane?
Chad Eickleberry has experienced more motor problems than just about anyone competing this year, yet, somehow he has been able to hold onto the Street Stock points lead by a slim margin over defending champion Brian Johnson. The two drivers are nearly a lock-in to run close together in just about every race they compete in and when you throw in Michael Mullins and second-year driver Bryce McMillin into the mix, the championship standings between the top four is less than 50 points between the top four. Another driver who has quietly finished consistently this year is Concordia’s Brian Cox who is now fifth in the standings.
Will John Brooks rain on Eickleberry and Johnson’s parade this weekend … only time will tell.
What more can be said about the b-modified drivers at CMS, but that they are simply an outstanding group of drivers who race hard to the finish of every race. Although current point leader Brad Smith is a multiple-time winner this season, he is not running away with the championship. Both Dalton Kirk, and Jacob Ebert, last year’s runner-up, both sit less than fifty points behind Smith. The Isaacs Brothers, defending track champion Ethan, and Lucas, both of Bonner Springs, Kansas currently hold down fourth and fifth in the b-mod hunt. Consistent car counts and super-competitive racing is a guarantee each week from this division.
So, if you’re looking for something a little different to do with the family or your buds, get out of the normal routine of sitting around playing video games and watching dull boring movies and come out and actually enjoy some good-old fashioned car racing. At CMS, the action is always close and the show moves along, there are no unnecessary delays in the program and generally you will witness over fifteen events in a three-hour time span. Don’t forget to bring something for the drivers to sign for you! General admission is $12 and there are plenty of discounts including $8 admission for senior citizens 65 years and older, military w/I.D. card, college students with college I.D., and kids 13 to 17 years of age. Children 6 to 12 years of age get in for $6 and young ones 5 and under are always free; anyone permanently confined to a wheelchair may enter our admission gates free! There are two sides of the speedway to choose from, both include full concessions and restrooms. The front side features the CMS Hammer Down Bar right off of Hwy 13. Our pit-side stands (non-alcoholic) are located adjacent to the pit areas for our drivers. Pit gates open weekly at 4:30 with grandstands opening at 5. Hot laps begin at 7, racing begins 7:30.
